Quilt rescue
2 Attachment(s)
This started out as a dirty, falling apart, smelly top...made from flour and feed sacks and whatever. Note the swastica print. After some TLC,I hand quilted it with wool batting. Got a blue ribbon at the fair.

Pretty rescue! Congrats on the ribbon!
Great save!
I love "saving" old quilts, too. It breaks my heart a little to see them fall apart to be thrown away after all the work that went into them by their original makers. You did a beautiful job repairing and quilting it! Wonderful!
Very nice save!
Stunning! Good job rescuing it! Do you know the history of this quilt? Who's wedding was it for? Is it from Oregon originally?
Wonderful job at the rescue and restoration! I just acquired one that needs major TLC.
Terrific quilting restoration and getting the ribbon was a bonus! YAY!
Congratulations on your ribbon. But that's not a "Swastika" print...only half of one, so more just a plain ole "Z".
Golly I just am amazed at people who give things like this away. That was a lot of work to make. I'm so glad you rescued it. I wonder what they would think if they knew you quilted it and got a blue ribbon on it! Good for you.
great job - a real antique beauty!!
ETA - I can see the swastika print - it is grey and black. |
I save old quilt tops too. I have such a wonderful selection to put on my bed. I don't use them like newer ones, afraid they will fall apart with washing over and over.
I have no info about who made the top....the fabrics have a lot of variety...some look like 1890's....some in the 30's. The flour sacks still have printed numbers on them. It's been a fun quilt...I put it over the GKs when they visit.
PS, it worries me, seeing older fabric like this hanging from that type of clip. JMHO
What a rescue! You did a beautiful job on saving a beautiful quilt.
Very nice job at rescuing the quilt and getting a blue ribbon besides.....it's sad to see a beautiful quilt go waste.....
Donita |
great job saving a beautiful quilt-congratulations on the ribbon
As for the "swasticka print"...if the fabric dates to pre-1940's or so..the swasticka was actually used as a symbol for friendship and wasn't demonized until Hitler started using it!!!
Google ( gammadion cross, cross cramponnée, or manji)to get the history...it wasn't always a sign of evil! |
Lucky you I love it.
Beautiful quilt! Congrats on the ribbon. Seems like it would of had some sentimental value to someone. Can't see them getting rid of it. Great find for you though
Hey...I only. Hang that quilt once for under 3 minutes while I photograph it. No worries.
Blue ribbon! Wow! That's great!
Great restore....
What a wonderful save! I think it is harder to repair than create from new. Great job!!
No wonder you won a ribbon with saving this quilt. It is a stunning DWR quilt. Your hand quilting just added to it loveliness.
Congrats on the blue ribbon, how nice that you had the time and talent to restore this antique quilt.
