Such a sad and touching story. The quilt is just amazing.

Simply lovely! Thankful she said yes to you. Wonderful gesture to give her a picture to treasure!!

It is a gorgeous quilt and lovely story. I'm with the others who are telling you to make a picture, label, give her a picture etc. I am so thankful she was able to give it to you with the story so the quilt doesn't end up at Goodwill with an unknown name and history. Yes, you are lucky or blessed or whatever you want to call it but now you have a responsibility too.

I can only imagine how much it would mean to the lady who sold you the quilt to have a photo of the quilt, with her holding it! That would be something she can treasure -- a photo doesn't take that much room, but oh, how full her heart would be. I have a quilt embroidered by my aunt many years ago, that to me is very valuable, but probably not to anyone else. I think I need to get a picture of my aunt's quilt and post it in the appropriate place.

Beautiful and I am just thinking so early in the morning to try to get set up to make this one. I just hope I can do similar to what your grandmother did. Selling or giving it away would be out of the question. It is just perfect. Thank you for showing all of this a remarkable beautiful quilt.

We quilters know the real value of that quilt. Mcdaniel023, you did a beautiful thing by acquiring the quilt. I agree a label would be appropriate. The quilt is fantastic.

Beautiful quilt! She did the right thing by passing it on to someone that would treasure it.

Perfectly Gorgeous! Thanks for sharing the picture and the story. I have a quilt my Paternal Gr. Mother made in the Civil War Period. My Dad got that, and it has been to 2 sisters' home and a niece. The niece decided she didn't want it as she didn't know the Gr. Mother at all.

I am still trying to get this new computer learned on how to forward an email. When that happens, will post a picture of it. I keep it on the quilt rack and just show it to people if they really want to see it.

Thanks again,Mariah

What a treasure! Glad you found it, and glad it found you.

Fwiw, this quilt pattern is Farmer's Delight. It originated in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. You can still find the pattern but it may take a little digging. I was actually blessed with the pattern by the lady who designed it for paper piecing. My daughter was born in the remote mountains of VA so the pattern is priceless to me. There are a few quilts from the 1880's with this pattern. It's a rare pattern so your quilt is even more of a treasure!

Oh my, this story made me cry..... I am so glad that you bought the quilt and will treasure it. It might be a thought to write this all down to keep with the quilt for future generations. Well done you!

Hugs

Caroline

Thank you so much, stookey4. I love having this information. I am going to do some research and have the quilt appraised. This quilt deserves to have it's story preserved.

Beautiful quilt & beautiful story. I am so glad it ended up with someone like you who will appreciate & treasure it.

I'm getting teary just reading your story. I know how sad I'd be if I had to part with some of my treasured things.

If not too late, perhaps you can get the names/dates of all the people associated with this quilt and preserve that information for the person you had this quilt down to. Now that she's parted with the quilt, she may have remembered other things about the quilt that she was too emotional to tell you at the time.

javin22 08-08-2017 10:42 AM

Wow that is an amazing story and lucky you to have it. Beautiful!

just janet 08-09-2017 05:13 AM

Sad she didn't have family to pass it down to. I hope you do. I agree, it needs a label with it's history. I know you will treasure it as I treasure a quilt handed down to me by my mother. It was a wedding gift to her and sadly I don't know who made it, labels are so important.

Congrats on being the guardian of this beautiful quilt. As quilters we hope our love and effort will be appreciated long after we're gone.

debbiecharlie 08-09-2017 07:32 AM

Such a beautiful story, and a beautiful quilt! I know you will treasure and love it!

greaterexp 08-09-2017 03:04 PM

What a beautiful quilt and beautiful story. You have a great quilter's heart, and it sure showed that day. Enjoy your fabulous work of treasured art!

ellifour 08-10-2017 03:17 PM

I too think a label with the touching story and your info will make it more of a treasure.

nanac 08-16-2017 09:58 AM

What a beauty, and how lucky you are to be able to call this yours. That the lady could only trace back to 1902 is amazing, all by itself, but that it has held up so well all these years is beyond amazing. So nice that the quilt ended up with someone who truly appreciates it/
