Quilt of Valor

2 Attachment(s)
Before Hurricane Florence hit, I took the precaution of moving some fabrics (and a few other things) up onto tables and shelves in the hope that they would be spared if we flooded. Lucky for us, we did not experience flooding.

While moving the fabrics to higher ground, the panel at the center of this quilt was re-discovered. It's been a while since I made a QOV, so it got my attention. The red fabric around the panel was a scrap that also made it's way to higher ground. The darker blue fabric - a Christmas fabric from Connecting Threads several years ago, was a large remnant that I had been saving for a rainy day. (That means I like it so much I didn't want to use it.) It called me from it's secure, somewhat hidden spot on the shelving and said 'USE ME!" So I did.

How can I tell one of my favorite fabrics "No!"?

The lighter fabric was a new purchase because nothing in my very large stash worked with the panel, the red and blue fabric. I wasn't sure that it would work, but it had small "Statues of Liberty" in it, so I decided it HAD to work. I think it did.

At show and tell, either no one was brave enough to tell me it didn't work or it really does work.

Wonderful QOV..... And, yes, rest assured...the lighter fabric works. It pulls out all the colors of the panel and adds a splash of gold. I like!!! So glad you escaped the flooding.

Love this QOV.....I should make one too...it's something I've never done.

lindaschipper 10-20-2018 03:28 AM

cathyvv....do you recall where you found the lighter print with the Statue of Liberty, flags and government seal on it?

Really great quilt. That is a wonderful panel to work with and you did a great job coordinating other fabrics with it. Perfect quilt to be given to a service member who has served his or her country well.

I love when a project just comes together. Of course, a purchase usually is necessary to complete. That's how we end up with so many scraps! Beautiful job for a wonderful cause!

You are going to make some GI very happy.

Gorgeous, someone will love getting it.

cathyvv 10-20-2018 03:24 PM

Yes, Hobby Lobby had it. It was the only r/w/b patriotic fabric in that particular store.

I looked for the selvage so that I could tell you who made it,etc. but I must have disposed of it already.

Thank you. Per my eye dr, I have profound color blindness, but can see the basic colors. I probably don't see them quite the way most others do, but I see them. It's very difficult for me to distinguish shades, pastels do nothing for me, subtle fabric shading/piecing is sometimes undetectable to me. So mixing a fabric into a quilt is not easy for me.

I do ask for help, but in this case I didn't have the panel with me, so it was a gamble.

rosiewell 10-20-2018 05:52 PM

well done, I think all your borders fabric complement the panel, great job

I think it looks great. it would have been a bit mean to criticize something so nice and made for such a good cause.

ekuw 10-22-2018 08:19 AM

Yes! It definitely worked! That is a terrific quilt. Love everything about it :-)

Both of the guilds I belong to know that I am color blind. It's still amazing to me that, knowing that, they often ask me to sort fabrics by color. My response is, "Me? The color blind person?" Other times I just say ok, then sit with a group of members and start asking advice. They jump to my aid and soon the fabrics are all sorted correctly.
