On the ones I did, I used 2 circles of fabric with a flannel one in between instead of using the square insert. That way the back is already finished.

I saw where one person made this with flannel but she did the wrong sides together so you don't have to turn the circles and then it also freys like a rag quilt. Very pretty

I guess I don't quite understand the square part. Have you done a step by step pictures for this ? Thanks, looks like a fun thing to try.
