Quilted corduroy jacket

2 Attachment(s)
Years ago when I was lucky enough to get a huge assortment of 21-wale corduroy remnants at pennies on the dollar, I made quilted bomber jackets for my daughters--one black, one navy and one dark green--using the Heart Warming Jacket pattern by Gail Abeloe. I have wanted one for myself ever since.

With corduroy, you get an interesting effect when you turn the nap in opposite directions. This jacket is made from four slightly different navy remnants. It is three layers--corduroy, flannel and quilting cotton--with poly lining added in the sleeves to make it easy to get on and off.

Making it was a very good reminder of why I don't want to sew clothing anymore. I am SO glad it's finished!

...and it is beautiful!!

Wow! That is a really nice jacket. Garment sewing never came naturally to me so when I see someone who can sew clothes like this I am in awe :-)

That is so professional looking! You really did a beautiful job with it. Wear it proudly! And congratulations on finally making one for yourself.

Very nice sewing and quilting! Love the beautiful lining, too.

Beautiful jacket. You do outstanding work!

osewme 03-15-2019 03:47 PM

That's gorgeous. You do wonderful, professional work & should be very, very proud of the jacket. I wish I could sew like you!

dunster 03-15-2019 04:38 PM

I love that jacket! I used to sew all my own clothes... 40+ years ago. Now I would be afraid to try. But I look at all my quilting cotton and think how nice some of those pieces would look in a blouse...

I love corduroy and used to live near Crompton Corduroy where I could buy remnants directly from the plant in Virginia. You wouldn't believe how much of the stuff I wore growing up!

BSKTLOFR-QUILTER 03-15-2019 05:18 PM

Wow. I gave up making "clothes" many, many years ago. You did an amazing job even after all these years.

Chasing Hawk 03-15-2019 05:35 PM

What a beautiful jacket. I love sewing clothes, call me weird but I do.

If I made that I would be showing it off everywhere!

cashs_mom 03-15-2019 06:54 PM

Nice! I have some of that narrow wale corduroy. It's so nice and soft. It's almost like velvet. I really should make something out of it.

I love sewing clothes, too, Chasing Hawk. I was thinking the other day that I need to start another wearable art project. I could use a new jacket.

Such a beautiful jacket and you did a wonderful job on it. Bet it is nice and warm too.

Keitha 03-16-2019 07:04 AM

Amazing jacket. I understand why you were glad when it was done.
Did you add the banding before or after you quilted it?

Keitha, making and quilting the patchwork is the first step. The ribbing is almost last, just before the adding the zipper and finishing the binding at the neck.

How cool is that bomber jacket! I bet you will really enjoy all of the compliments. Sewing garments is very rewarding that way. You are very very good at this.

Jingle 03-16-2019 03:38 PM

You made a beautiful jacket. Looks professionally made.

Very professional looking. Taking orders???????

oksewglad 03-16-2019 06:08 PM

What a fun great looking jacket! Here's a pattern link if anyone is interested. This would be fun in spring colors for those not quite warm enough spring days I'm hoping to come soon!

Another former garment sewer here, too. For some reason it's not as satisfying as quilting. Or maybe my kids grew up and I didn't "need" to sew to save $. You could 35-40 years ago.

You did a beautiful job. It looks gorgeous!

I am so impressed. What a lovely jacket you created.

JoyjoyMarie 03-17-2019 12:31 PM

That came out so absolutely professional looking! Good for you. I don't garment sew anymore - don't need much in terms of wardrobe lately, and I hate fitting stuff! Just like playing with fabric and patterns and my imagination on quilts.

sue.ross.8782 03-17-2019 04:29 PM

Beautiful jacket.

PamelaOry 03-17-2019 06:03 PM

Beautiful work!

quilterpurpledog 03-18-2019 04:31 AM

That is a great looking jacket. You certainly used the characteristics of the corduroy fabric to best design advantage. I hope you will enjoy wearing it. I like to do garment sewing and still make quite a few of my clothes. I always make 'unique' items from patterns that I find in quilt stores.

SusieQOH 03-18-2019 04:35 AM

Wow, that's fantastic!! You are so talented :)

tranum 03-18-2019 04:38 AM

Well done ! We learned tailoring in Home Ec and there was a day I sewed my blazers to wear to work but have lost all desire to do garment sewing. I would like to sew matching outfits for our 4 great grandkids though.

Sallybear6 03-18-2019 10:40 AM

What a nice jacket! It looks so professional!!

IrishgalfromNJ 03-18-2019 10:48 AM

I love, love, love your jacket. You did a really nice job on it. Thanks for sharing your project. I hope you get many years of wear out of it. I'm sure you'll get tons of compliments.

Painiacs 03-18-2019 03:33 PM

Wow what a great job you did!! Haven't sewn clothes in years!! Those were a lot of work , hope they are appreciated and worn for many years!!! If not I'd be glad too haha
