Yesterday I made a friend a purse, and today made two more. It has a metal tape measure for the closure, called snap happy. I didn't use the pattern, just the idea. I quilted them too.

dang Lady, they are adorable and you have lots of pockets in them. I have two pocketbook patterns and I love the bags. I have yet to even take the patterns out because I am already intimadated by the look of the finished purses. LOL

Thanks. From home depot
No really, I did get a retractable tape measure and got the idea of making a large purse from a pattern I saw. Here it is.

I read about these tape measure closures years ago, but had forgotten about them until I saw this pattern at my last guild meeting.

You need a good heavy duty one.

There is a free tutorial on tatteredgarden.com for the snap bags with the metal tape measure enclosure

I have made small change purses with the metal tape measure and wondered if it would work for a purse. Thanks for sharing. I am inspired to make one. However, I think I need a pattern.

Jeanniejo 06-17-2010 04:18 AM

I love your bag. I asked my dh about tape measures and he said many people return theirs to Sears when they break and Sears replaces them. They usually have a box near the register with the broken ones. its usually the front tab that breaks otherwise the tape is good. You might stop in and ask for one or two, I know I plan to. Denise

Very clever.

I didn't know that, thanks for the tip!

Make sure you use a heavy duty one, not a flimsy tape measure and round off the ends and tape it with duck tape so it doesn't cut your fabric.

You need to hold it open. That's what I like about it, I don't have to remember to close it.

harvsstuff 06-28-2010 02:31 PM

:) Thank you I thought I messed up. Denise
