My 5 year old granddaughter, Gillian is starting to learn to quilt. I got her and Emily a sewing machine a few weeks ago. Their mom is working with them and I think she is doing a super job teaching the girls. So for now they sew with mom and get to sew with me too.

Jamie said for now Gilli just likes sewing her blocks together and loves cutting the threads

Wonderful!

retrogirl02 08-31-2008 04:06 AM

OH MY GOSH!! What an awesome job she's doing! I wish I'd have learned quilting that young. She's gonna be a pro before long. How great that you have such good little helpers in your sewing room.

My munchkin just got some cards with sewing holes in them and some colorful string from nana...she's a fabricaholic in the making and mommy & nana are so proud. Looks like you have a wonderful reason or two to be proud, yourself.

Oh Donna wouldn't that be just too cute seeing them sitting at their sewing machines and sewing, eating their chocolates and taking about Hannah Montana and High School Musical and singing all the favorite songs. I can just picture that now

PamH 08-31-2008 04:30 AM

Thanks Retrogirl,
We are very proud of the interest the girls are taking in quilting. It is so fun to share their excitment in every little block they make.

Your little munchkin will sewing with you and Nanna in no time!!! How old is she?

Oh yes she is very neat about that, they have to lay on her sewing table next to her untill she is all done the she'll toss them in her mom thread catcher. I'm going to make her a thread catcher of her very own, she just loves the one i made for her mommy.

I think about it all the time, I think it would be great if all these little ones lived close together, What fun that would be, mom's and granma's on one side children on the other! 3 generations of quilters!! And Maddy is into Hannah Montana too!

PamH 08-31-2008 04:51 AM

WE WOULD ALL HAVE ALOT OF FUN AND ALOT OF GOOD BONDING TIME.

Bevanger 08-31-2008 04:52 AM

awwwwwww look at that precious face. You can tell she's really enjoying it. She is such a sweetie grandma

tarib 08-31-2008 05:06 AM

Great job, thats the way to learn when you are young and things just absorb in, not bounce off like when you get older

retrogirl02 08-31-2008 05:10 AM

PamH,
she just turned 3 and loves spending time in mommy's room, helping out. I have an L shaped work area so she's always right there, on her bar stool playing along with me. It won't be long and I'll be sharing the stash....I can't wait!

beachlady 08-31-2008 05:49 AM

She is so proud of what she made. She is so cute. I started sewing at about 12, but didn't start my quilting until I was an old lady. Just think of all the things she will be able to do.

Do you think she might make some of my wish list for me?

Janstar 08-31-2008 06:30 PM

PamH 09-01-2008 04:10 AM

Wow Bluebird your GD is real in deep concentration on her sewing. She is gonna be great at it just like grandma.

PamH 09-01-2008 04:16 AM

Thanks ladies----- and yes speaking as a grandma I think all of our young sewing buddies are doing great. Can't wait to see some of their work in a few years down the line. I just love all the interest these girls are showing in quilting and that we get to help continue on the quilting tradition with all our granddaughters.

Such special times and memories we are making in their lives and ours!!!!!

bluebird 09-01-2008 07:39 AM

Pam,
The girls are doing so well with their sewing. Main thing is to allow them to enjoy themselves, and that they are doing :D :D
When I bought my new machine I looked at the one for kids. If I had more GD's it would have been a good investment. You are starting them out with such wonderful experiences and they will always remember their first projects.
Started my GD out with paper circles and squares on my old machine. She did well and so I thought, ok, lets try material  Well, she had trouble regulating the speed, ya know, pedal to the metal. Hope it won't be me teaching her how to drive. Put her on my new one with the speed control and she did great. She still has to learn speed control on the old machines
Grandkids are such a blessing and so much more when we can teach them about life and the love of quilting.

Up North 09-01-2008 08:52 AM

I read somewhere when teaching children to sew (to place I think they said an eraser in your foot pedal) so they can't sew to fast.

PamH 09-01-2008 09:22 AM

MY DH made special holders for all our foot pedals and that really helps the girls so they don't mash it down

It really helps keep it from sliding around the floor too

bluebird 09-01-2008 03:37 PM

Good ideas, thank you.

Boston1954 09-01-2008 04:33 PM

That's great!! Wish I had started that early. Oh, to think of how many quilts I could have done by now............

Anne

Isn't wonderful to see the next generation of quilters. My grand daughter is 5 and just starting to sew too. She lives with me so we get to sew together almost every day. Isn't great to watch their faces and feel their excitement. I love it.

PamH 09-01-2008 06:44 PM

Littlehud I totally agree with ya!!!!
