Quilting in the Round

3 Attachment(s)
This is a quilt I made for a friend recovering from surgery for a hip replacement. He is young and it was pretty unexpected. He has quirky sense of humor and I tried to come up with something that would appeal to that and perhaps bring on a smile or a chuckle during a long recovery. He won't be allowed to sit for more than 30 minutes at a time for several months. I am pleased with the way it turned out. For the top I chose a striped fabric and cut 4 quarter-circles, identical. Rotated they created a nice convergence. I chose cartoons that I thought would appeal to him and printed them onto fabric. After heat setting the prints, I framed them with a bright print and appliqued them to the top with contrasting thread, a bright green to pick up the color of the backing and in the prairie points. I didn't get a photo of the back before I gave it to him but it matches the green prairie points. Quilting is an all over meander to about a quarter of an inch from the cartoons, the a quarter-inch around each cartoon and around the inside of the frame. He loves the quilt and his physical therapist liked it too.

This went together very quickly, start to finish in about a week. Now the week I did was a week spent with my sisters at a sew-a-thon we have a couple of times a year; not a week where I also have to put in my 40 hours at work. I may do another similar, perhaps using cover art from favorite movies. I hope you like it.

That is a really special quilt, so fun and cheerful. I can see why he and the therapists love it.

Great job - love the prairie points on it, too. What made you think of round? I love it, but it would never have occured to me.

Wow! You really are outside the box! What a great quilt! (Can't stop using !!!! marks!) As the kid said, in response to the teacher telling the class to "think outside the box": "Is it OK if we think outside the circle, also?" You certainly have done that. Your quilt is so organic, so alive with movement! So specifically special. I'd love to see what else you have done. If you put up more of your work please pm me so I'll be sure not to miss it. Like so many, I can't spend time on QB everyday.
