Quilts with dark backgrounds

Hey all, would love to see pictures of quilts you’ve made with dark backgrounds like black, navy or dark grey. I’m getting a little bored of white and cream quilts with brightly coloured patchwork!

The only quilt I've ever done with dark background was the Bonnie Hunter mystery a couple of years ago. I had lots of blacks with a lot of white in them.

Ha ha, Joe’s Mom; that’s why I asked!!
I’m thinking of doing Bonnie’s mystery this year with a dark background!

Ha! The trouble I ran into was my purples not contrasting well with my blacks, most apparent in the border.

This year her reds seem very bright, so I think if you stick with the brighter reds, it should look amazing.

Here's a some of my latest. I find that I'm picking gray tones light to dark and black is dramatic with bright prints.

I spent a number of years exploring "black as a neutral", unfortunately most of those were before my digital camera. I do have pictures but they are old school developed type in photo albums and not scanned in.

Here's one of my "almost Amish" projects, still waiting to be quilted. I have a pattern and need a bit more practice before I attempt to do a feather border. It is actually "Midnight Purple" for the background.

PS -- have you looked at the Bonnie Hunter fabric selections for this year? I think black or at least very dark could work well with bright Aqua, Red, and Orange.

I do have a thread submitted for this year's mystery, should be up today :)

OMG, what a beautiful version of Halo Medallion! It's on my bucket list, but I hadn't thought of making it with a dark background. Yours is so stunning!

I like to use a dark navy. It sets off so many colors.

I've never used a dark background, but I am loving all the beautiful quilts everyone has shared here. I had enough trouble sewing black binding onto a quilt with a black border! That was my first Bonnie Hunter mystery, Allietare! I guess the darker the background, the brighter the blocks will have to be. Is that everybody's experience?

I like quilts with dark backgrounds. They can be very attractive as long as they are hung on a light wall/backdrop.

Here is one that I did with Kaffe fabrics with a dark purple grunge as a background. So far out of my comfort zone but I was very pleased with the end result.

Here's a quilt I did several years ago. My great-niece loved it, so I gave it to her. It has a minky back.

I have made only three dark quilts. I have a problem enjoying making and finishing them. But, I made this lap sized one for hubby last year.
And this one for my grandson. Not very dark really.
And last is the one for my son.

When someone mentions a dark background my mind immediately goes to Amish black, but honestly, dark can be any thing that is not light. I was thrilled when I discovered that a royal purple could be a dark background and it changed the whole appearance of the pattern and final quilt. Do you recall the craze a few years back to use cheddar as a background? Some stunning results.

So take the leap and leave the white/cream behind for a quilt now and again and enjoy the results. I see that many of you have already.

I felt the same about the light backgrounds. Here are a couple with gray and black that I have made in the last couple of years just to mix it up a bit. I do like how the bright colors pop off the darker color

I probably only have one, with a navy background

I've made several, and have more in the planning stages. I like the drama of a dark background.
