I thought I would share aa few quilts I did for a friend using his fathers neck ties. Apparently he wore them all the time and he had plenty! There were one of the few things my friend kept upon his death. I ended up creating three different quilts.

The first on was for him and his wife. I actually used the entire tie as it was. I was going for the fan pattern. I do the quilting at my local quilt shop using their long arm.

This was the third quilt I did for his daughter. I did a crazy quilt pattern using up all the left over bits and pieces from all the ties. You can see on the sides I use the small ends and large ends of the points.

This was the second quilt I did for and it was for his brother who was a single guy. So I really wanted something that looked more manly than most quilts!

You can see I just cut strips in different widths from the ties. I was really pleased with this one.

Very pretty quilts! I've always wondered about using mens ties in my quilts but haven't tried it yet. Thanks for the inspiration.

Very cool...love the crazy pattern and the last one is very masculine. Thanks for sharing these with us, helps us all get inspired.

Great way to recycle. Love all your quilts.

Those are outstanding. My mother did 1 that radiated out from the centerlike a large dresden plate. She used the wide tips as a border. They were My dad's. My DH's dad's and some of my Dh's. We have 3 sons and she gave it to the oldest one. I really liked the one you did that looks like Chineese coins.

susie0808 08-16-2011 05:32 AM

You are very creative! Really beautiful! How did you prepare the ties? Did you clean them, before working with them? If so how?

We all have a bunch of ties from our family members and now you have given us something to think about here!!
So thanks for sharing!!!!

I have a tote full of ties, all washed and ready to use, but haven't decided on how to construct a quilt although I do have the book "Daddys Ties".

Wine Woman 08-16-2011 07:06 AM

Quilting Fran 08-16-2011 07:47 AM

All your tie quilts are beautiful. I have worked with ties on a few quilts. Just finished one for a friend, who lost your husband this year. She was so pleased. He had so many unique ties, it was really fun to work with them.

amma 08-17-2011 08:39 PM

you did a beautiful job on using these ties, I am sure all 3 loved their quilts :D:D:D

I agree....Great quilts using the sentimental ties. What a keepsake you created! And you did a very nice job. Love them.

dhanke 08-18-2011 11:21 AM

They are simply smashing. I agree with you, I really like the last one, it's more contemporary looking than any tie quilt I've seen.

thelondonzoo 08-18-2011 11:27 AM

So great! I had made a cushion cover from ties once that was a crazy quilt pattern. It was such a pretty design.

Scrap Happy 08-18-2011 11:33 AM
