Rag quilt finish
 

I like the look of the rag quilts made from jeans - but I did not like the idea of a raw outside edge.

All the seams are double-stitched.

I came up with a solution that I'm comfortable with.

These are two small quilts - 36 x 44 - I cut up old Eddie Bauer chamois shirts - and jeans

I love my jean rag quilts! Two of them have batting and minkee backings. They are super heavy so we use them for cold football games and watching Christmas parades! The animals love them and they hold up beautifully with all the washings :)

I have read that it is better to take a freshly made/clipped one to a laundromat so one does not mess up one's washer and dryer.
How does the laundromat equipment deal with all that shedding and fraying of those threads.

The double sewing was just to make the seams stronger. I got a little sloppy on the exactness of the seams being exactly on top of each other.

Great quilt, how bad do your hands hurt?

My hands don't hurt at all - I bought some Heritage Cutlery 6-1/2" Rag Quilting Snips and they are awesome. (Thank you to the person that recommended them - I am embarrassed to say that I don't remember for sure who that is)

I was getting annoyed that the safety catch was hooking up while I was snipping - after a DUH moment, I realized that if I held that side to the bottom, it would NOT catch.

Very Cool!!! I'm not the only one who did something different. I added a border like normal, enclosing the last blocks seam and then clipped the border fabric. Anyway it's done is Cool!!

I wash any shirts whole before clipping in hot water on heavy cycle. I'm just going to cut the seams off any way. I do the jeans the same way. They go into the washer actually before they go into the house. I made my own lingerie bag so to speak. Cut a large 36 " in diameter circle of durable netting material and sewed a drawstring pocket around the edges. Like a large drawstring laundry bag. I use that for scraps and also when I want to wash my furbabies leashes and collars. I also have the lingerie bags for the smaller scraps that have zippers.

I love rag quilts. Preparing flannel right now so that on my day off I can get the AccuCut out and cut a lot of squares. I normally will do alot of blocks and have them ready in a tote so that if I need a quick gift its just a matter of picking out the proper squares for the intended and sewing them together. I like the backs to be no prints but can be multi colored. I then either applique something on the back or this time I'm going to embroidery designs on instead of the square with the X to hold them together. I have a DGD due this month and another one due in Nov plus my 2yr old wants one. This time it'll be a teaching session as well. My daughter wants to learn and what better way for her to learn while she's helping cut all of those squares. I think this time I'll either take them to a laundry mat, since there are a few or put them into a mesh bag to hold all of the strings. But I so love the finished product. If you use fleece then you get the effect of the rag without any fraying.
