I just finished my first rag quilt. It is a Christmas gift for my MIL. I was pleased with the way it turned out. Very easy to make. I think that I might make several of these for Christmas gifts. The worst part of this quilt is cutting all the little snips. I still don't have all of the lint removed but I wanted to share it with you all

I agree that the snipping is the worse part. I purchased a pair of rag quilt scissors by Fishkars which helped a lot! They are spring loaded. Cost around $20.00, but well worth it! Barb

Thanks. I used cotton for the front and back and flannel for the inside. I cut all three squares the same size. I used a 7 in sq and 1/2 in seam. They go together really quick. It takes longer to snip the seams than anything else.

Thanks, I am going to try it, may even get some of those scissors for the rag quilts :D

I think that I'll buy some of those scissors also. Did you get them at WM?

I just want to curl up in it. Very pretty. I have never try a rag quilt now seeing this one I just might.

sewmuch 07-27-2007 01:42 PM

I went to Joann's today and purchased a pair of the Fiskars rag quilt
scissors, had a 50% off coupon so they were 9.99 good deal. Can't wait to try them. :D

live2teach 07-27-2007 08:43 PM

Very very pretty. I love those sunflowers. I actually have the same material, I bought awhile back to make a rag purse. lol.

Celeste 07-27-2007 09:10 PM

Your MIL should LOVE this!

Otherwise, I'm willing to give it a good home!

you can buy the spring loaded Fiskars, the small one, at Walmart. They work great and alittle cheaper.

ccbear66 07-28-2007 05:07 AM

Thank you all for the encouragement. Like I said this is the easiest quilt I have made so far. I have the fabric already bought to make two more but I'm going to buy some of those Faskars before I cut them.

i got a pair of these scissors at wmart. they really save your hands and are super sharp at the tip. very much worth the price. don't know if i'd make a rag quilt with all the snip, snip, snip, without them.
beautiful quilt. i'm doing a few for xmas also. i made a flannel for myself, and it is the fav. of all the kids and grownups too;)

amma 09-17-2007 11:09 PM

I just love that fabric, the colors are beautiful as well as the design, you did an awesome job on the quilt and have inspired me to get started on one too :D :D :D

ButtercreamCakeArtist 09-18-2007 12:51 PM

NIce work! I haven't finished my first one, but I have started it!!

I also have the Fiskars scissors. I got mine on sale at WM. I saw a pack of 2 for the price of one in a pricey quilt shop after that...it was almost as cheap to buy them individually at WM.

Just be careful working with those scissors. Mine are so sharp at the tip, and I've ran them into my finger!! They'd make a good weapon, as well.

ChristineD 09-18-2007 02:10 PM

What a great quilt! I love your choice of blue and the cute print. Is the fabric flannel?

ccbear66 09-18-2007 03:26 PM

Thank you all for the kind comments. No the fabric that I used is cotton. I did use flannel in the center. I cut all of my squares the same size 7 inch and used a 1/2 inch seam. I have made three others since this one and need to make at least two more before Christmas. I did buy the fiskars rag scissors and they have been a life saver.

Your quilt is beautiful!!
I'm gonna have to try one now. Love the colors. Thanks for sharing and for your helpful hints.

Knot Sew 09-26-2007 08:37 AM

Very nice. I haven't made one with cotton , only used flannel. I think I might try that on a really big one, to be used as a bedspread. How big are you making yours. again great job :D

PamH 09-26-2007 09:13 AM

I've been looking on line for patterns and they all show sewing a X on each one. But did you do that? Yours looks so much neater than the ones with the X. You really got me searching LOL when I should be working.

ccbear66 09-26-2007 11:47 AM

Thanks for the nice compliments. No I did not sew the x in the center of each block. I started out with a 7 inch block of cotton, flannel and cotton. All cut 7 inch square. I used a 1/2 in seam. So ended up with 6 inch block. So far I have made 4 of these. Most of them I made 9 sq wide by 13 sq long. On the ones that I only used two colors on I bought 4 yards of each color and 4 yds of flannel. Hope this helps. If I can be of anymore help to you just ask. They are really easy to make.

PamH 09-26-2007 12:07 PM

Thanks ccbear

Now I have a good reason to go fabric shopping --as if I ever needed a reason to fabric shop
