raggy denim quilt

I finished this one yesterday and after washing/drying I think it looks ok. I cut about 30 pair of jeans, all donated, into 6" squares and added a few colored squares of regular cotton for a pop of color. The top is put together rag style, no batting, and then used a pieced backing of scrap flannel. Each square has fmq designs, some random feathers, circles and such....some have ducks, cats, and teddy bears....and some are personal, using designs that relate to his hobbies (quilt is for DH). While it was a very simple quilt, requiring very few brain cells, it was very time consuming to fmq each of the 234 squares and even worse clipping all those edges. I don't think I will make another very soon.

Your quilt looks soft and complete. I have done 2 of them queen size. I know about the cutting of jeans, Mine were all done with hanbd cutting up the jeans. I did one using 6 inch sq. and 4 inch sq.

It looks great! It may have taken a while but I doubt you wil ever HAVE to make another because it will wear like iron.

I like pop of color! Your Inspector seems to approve of all the work you did so it must be a great quilt!

jetayre 03-21-2014 08:24 AM

GREAT quilt ... and very pretty kitty. I think your idea to add the colored squares really added the perfect touch to this. Hope DH is happy.
PS...are those llamas in your picture??? Every time i see your avatar, i remember my 3 year old grand-daughter asking me out of the clear blue sky.... "when Skippy (her dog) goes to God, can we get a llama?"

PenniF 03-21-2014 10:44 AM

OOPS....sorry... that question was for jetayre......my bad !!!!

nativetexan 03-21-2014 11:05 AM

Oh I like it a lot! Kitty too. I made one for the back of my sofa and for my cats of course!

QM 03-21-2014 11:10 AM

I like it and I am sure your DH will too. Obviously, Miss Cat loves it too.
Hint: I found on the one I made that a seam ripper made the fringing much easier.

My husband would love that, they only thing better would be if it were made from his old ratty jeans. Very cute!

I'm doing a faux catherdral windows that I saw on MSQC. It was going to be a king size bed spread but then I thought it would be too heavy so I'm doing it to throw on the couch. What are the measurements of yours and is it very heavy?

Yooper32 03-23-2014 03:50 AM

They do take every muscle in your body and stress each one mightily, don't they? Haven't done one for quite a few years now and probably won't be doing another as somehow, I keep getting older and more arthritiky. Did enjoy making several in my younger years though. The last one I did was the faux cathedral window, with red bandana fabric in the middle and yes, they are very heavy.

Would be excellent for a young man. Love your quilt and rag quilts are my favorite.

cherrio 03-23-2014 04:15 AM

I like it! I am working on one right now and the buggers are time consuming. simple but time consuming. I am making one for each of the grandsons for picnic sz or yard use or on their beds if they choose. That does look good with a bit o color!

JanieH 03-23-2014 06:29 AM

I love your use of the solid cottons to give the quilt a pop - really works! And your furbaby seems to approve also!
