look here to follow along....http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-85227-1.htm
So, I went out to try and find some more of the black with wavy spots (which I did find) to make the first border black as everyone suggested (thank you BTW). I was also looking for the material as the the small center blocks (see pic 2) and for some more of the striped one and was not able to find them. Now I did see more of theses two just a few months ago...but...as you know when you want it it's gone. I went to Joann's and Hancock's and did not see anything else I liked but the picture of the red, black, white flame looking one. I will have to look and the LQS and see what they have in reds, black and whites. Ladies your mission (because you guys are so great at finding things) if you choose accept it is to help me locate more of the stripes (David textiles) and the multi flower (legacy studios). I have already looked and did not find anything. I have also attached pics of possible borders, which one do you like?? this will be the backing Multi flower, I have 23 inches left option #4, stripes will be binding option #5 ( not really liking the the flame thing) border option #1, strips will be the binding...this is the one I keep going back to, I am liking this one Stripes, I have 35 inches left option #3..binding will be the same as the last border. option #2, stripes will be binding, or maybe no stripes at all? |
I vote for #3. I like the wider bolder last border. Makes a "now I'm done" statement. Other narrower ones kind of wimp out.

I also like 3- wow, what a fabulous quilt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D:D

No, the stripes wouldn't match the last border if it is the wider black and white print. I guess then #2 would be the one I prefer. I was confused by the stripe being in the middle of the other borders, thought you planned to use it as a border and binding too.
I use mitered corners often, and like the way they look, but some shy away from them. |
Well, now you have me concerned about the backing. I know you have yardage for this already, but I'm thinking the floral backing is a bit too feminine. Maybe you could use that backing for something else and go with maybe a solid black, gray, or red for the backing of this one.

#3 widest and darkest border last. I would also use the same dark border fabric for the binding.

I like #2. The flame fabric would probably be the better choice for the back but not as a border.
|
If you have enough yardage of the flame, I think that would be my choice for the backing.

Just make sure that if you're using the stripe for the binding that you cut it on the bias to give you diagonal stripes. Otherwise it won't line up well unless it's done absolutely perfect. It takes more fabric to make bias binding, and more care when attaching that it doesn't stretch. But the diagonal stripe gives you yet-another option!

I like option 1....

UPDATE!!!! I found 3 more yards of the multi flower one....YEAH!!!..Now I should have enough |
I am going to put my 2cents in. What about a solid inner border next to the main quilt, then the 2 prints and solid binding. The photos seem to me to have a lot of patterns fighting with the main quilt. Of course, I am a plain person and sometimes lack the vision some of the talented quilters on here.

That makes 3 on the solid black 1st border (wouldn't take much for a 1"-2" inner border). That is exactly what I had invisioned when Boxer Mom 1st mentioned an inner border. I like the solid inner borders because they seem to frame the quilt before the outer border is added. It's an "eye" thing.

P.S. Regardless of what you decide, I think this is going to be an awesome quilt and hope you share a pic of the finished quilt with us.
