Recycled Jeans Quilt

1 Attachment(s)
Cut 6 inch squares from old jeans from my husband (the black) and myself (the blue) to make a 44x60 throw for a homeless vet. We were asked to use flannel on the back for warmth, so I used three left over pieces and this quilt will be very warm. The hardest part is cutting the jeans and squares, but once that is done it goes together really fast.

Well done! That will last and keep someone warm this winter.

djmat 08-10-2015 09:12 PM

Wonderful quilt, love the patina!

Well done. It is a shame that our vets are in this situation.

Looks terrific.....I have quite a few pairs of old denim jeans I've been collecting to make a rag quilt for my grandson but after seeing your quilt I just may re-think my idea!

QuiltnNan 08-11-2015 02:56 AM

nicely done

Looks wonderful!

That looks great. I too have been collecting denim. Simple squares look great. It makes me want to make one with a red flannel back and tied in red thread.

NIICHMOM 08-11-2015 06:27 AM

A few years back I made 2 denim quilts for 2 of my grandsons. 1 using 6 inch squares from their Dad & Gr father's jeans. and 1 4inch squares from his & Brothers jeans size 4 thru 8... I chose not to do the rag quilt. I too tied in red with flannel backing. They are still using them and are in good shape.

Nice work! Someone will appreciate your efforts!

I have a lot of jeans from husband and family. Neighbor heard about homeless vets few years back and met one after giving him a quilt. She had a 1/2 bath with a shower in her garage. He had no family and her deceased husband was a vet. With his help she turned part of her garage into an apt. for him to live. He became her handy-man.

Peg, your quilt looks very worm and nice. The vet that gets it will be a very lucky person, it is greatly appreciated.

red-warrior 08-11-2015 04:30 PM

What a wonderful gift for a vet who could use some warmth and cheer!

QUILTNMO 08-11-2015 04:32 PM

Grandma Peg 08-11-2015 07:47 PM

Thanks for the nice comments.

How wonderful your quilt turned out. I have had a denim quilt like this since 1976 and it still looks great!
It keeps me toasty warm when I take it to football games in the fall. You will make someone super happy.

twinkie 08-12-2015 02:57 AM

Good job. It will be treasured by some fortunate recipient.

earthwalker 08-12-2015 03:07 AM

It's a beautiful quilt and it will mean so much more than a warm cover for someone. These are the best kind of quilts in my opinion. Love the colours in yours and the patina as said before.

As an aside I am starting to buy blokes (mens) jeans for myself from now on. I am totally fed up with jeans containing elastane.

heather1949 08-12-2015 03:09 AM

What a great person you are to do that, its lovely, well done :)

WisWis 08-12-2015 04:07 AM

What a lovely present.

coopah 08-12-2015 04:31 AM

That's going to keep the vet warm. It is a kind thing for you to do.

Coloradowest 08-12-2015 05:43 AM

Yes, your quilt very nice. I had a denim block throw given to me as prize. All kids of shades f blues and she cut strips of darker blue for a like 3 incher border. She sews jean pockets here and there. My son who was 50 was packing for me and saw it. Thought great and pockets. I like blocks better than rag.

And denim jeans come in lots of colors. When the thrift shop down home would have sale like 50 cents I would buy a few colors.

tammyg 08-12-2015 06:31 AM

That is so good of you to do this.....

EmiliasNana 08-12-2015 07:44 AM

Peg: I love this quilt. What a great quilt for a homeless vet. It will be warm and wear like iron. I made our oldest son a similar quilt when he went to college 22 yrs. ago and it is still doing duty for #2 son. (Never got around to making him one so he inherited it........blush)

annette1952 08-12-2015 07:47 AM

Great quilt! I'm sure he will cherish it. So sad that he is homeless

lynnie 08-12-2015 07:57 AM

beautiful, looks like wool

fayeberry 08-12-2015 08:17 AM

That looks so nice, how good of you to make it.

Tiggersmom 08-12-2015 09:29 AM

How did you piece it together???

Love the look and very thoughtful of you to do this. It will absolutely help a vet this winter.

madamekelly 08-12-2015 04:47 PM

I love your quilt, but I am puzzled by a question. Isn't 44"x 60" kind of small to keep a homeless veteran warm?

ChrisDee 08-12-2015 04:57 PM

I too am making several quilts out of cut up jeans but yours looks very cohesive , mine...not so much. Nice job.The Lord bless you for providing for warmth and comfort to those in need!

Annz 08-12-2015 05:44 PM

Very nice.

katesnanna 08-12-2015 06:19 PM

Not to denigrate the generous work you ladies do for your veterans but seem a crying shame that they should be homeless. Lots of people say they are proud of them so how can the government let this happen to them. I don't want to cause controversy but it seems a terrible end for those who gave up so much.

nlpakk 08-12-2015 06:49 PM

Yes I made one of those for my grandson for Christmas one year and it turned out very heavy but warm. He seems to like it.

MadQuilter 08-12-2015 06:50 PM

What a great way to upcycle.
