I have saved all my DH shirts and pick up many shirts from the thrift stores and estate sales. I check many of the blouses also. I found some blouses with cutwork and embroidery. Those are great for girl quilts and applique. If you don't cut into the applique but very close around it, it can be a great addition to a quilt.

Love this!!!!

This is fantastic and not only appropriate for a little boy. You are very clever and frugal.

imdelagarza62 09-02-2013 07:24 AM

Perfect quilt and pattern. If he decides to hang on to it like so many do, this will definitely last through the years since it isn't a babyish fabric. Great idea.

It's very handsome, love the pattern and the entire look.

I love this quilt, so clean and refreshing. I have been sitting here this morning unpicking some of the shirts I got from a thrift shop. They are great.

I find it is quicker to cut the seams off. Bonnie Hunter has a great youtube video on deboning a shirt. She does one shirt in about 7 minutes. time well spent I think. :)

It's so lovely, I am a great believer in recyling fabrics and love stripes-- well done, Letty

Very nice. The shirtings make it look like a little boy quilt.

MargeD 09-02-2013 12:06 PM

Great way to recycle old shirts, and they would be soft from many washings.

Quiltchen 09-02-2013 01:08 PM

LOL at the deboning!! That's exactly what I did. No time to pick out all those little stitches! I didn't save the buttons though and have been told that was a crime!

Thank you for all the sweet compliments! You guys are just the best here. I can't wait to finish something else and post it here. What a great place this is!!

matraina 09-03-2013 07:39 AM

What a great quilt! Wonderful job.

quiltjoey 09-03-2013 07:24 PM

I love your little boy's quilt from men's shirts. You are so clever. Great job!

I tear the shirts apart like Bonnie Hunter also.
I also buy 100 % cotton sheets for backing for quilts. I'm cheap and am having a hard time spending all that money on a yard of fabric.

Making a quilt can really run into money these days. If you only make one quilt now and then, buying the fabrics wouldn't be so bad but when you have an addiction like I do, well.....

I used one this week for the backing of a wall hanging I am doing...

daisydebby 09-03-2013 07:34 PM

Your quilt is so perfect!!! I'll bet it's SO soft:) This idea is a keeper....bet lots of us want to make a similar quilt. Thanks so much for sharing:)

You may call it simple........I call it great!!

LDB 09-04-2013 05:21 AM

I love this pattern! Did you have a speed method of cutting / sewing the triangles? I am always looking for a quick method for patterns.

Bobbielinks 09-04-2013 05:29 AM

This is wonderful!! Great idea for a little boy! I love your quilt.

Striped shirts

I just finished and delivered this one. I shopped every Goodwill and Salvation Army and thrift store in the county looking for blue striped shirts in 100% cotton. I have a hard time making quilts for baby boys. I can't applique and all the cute ones require that it seems. So this is what I came up with. Simple, but I like the way it turned out. I only used the front panel on the shirts so now I will have to come up with more ideas to use up the rest. It was cheaper at most places than buying yardage. The XL shirts have lots of fabric!! I may have to start looking at other used clothing in the future! Oh and it's super soft due to the fact the shirts have been washed so many times!

Love your use of the striped shirts. I have avoided using them much because of the stripes. You did a wonderful job. I'll be checking my shirt stash for more and now am inspired again.
