Remember my "They Went That Way?" It shrunk!!!

After purchasing some color catchers I finally washed my king size quilt. When I put it back on the bed, the size was amazingly smaller! It shrunk by 4" both ways! When I made it I thought it was too large. Now it is just the right size. Does a denser quilt mean a warmer quilt?

BTW: My color catchers caught lots of red dye.

Sorry, the picture is dark. In real life the quilt looks brighter than it did before washing it.

Lovely quilt. That's why I wash all my fabric first.

Beautiful quilt. Is that a Bichon I see taking a little nap?

Lovely quilt and inspector seems comfortable.... :-)

Beautiful quilt, love your quilt inspector too!

What a beautiful quilt. I have also always washed all my fabric first, and yet, I received TUBS of cut squares last summer, which were not washed, and I have made 4 quilts, and love the feel of working with the unwashed fabric. That being said, I will still continue to wash my fabric. These quilts are shrinking some, but not as much as yours did. Sure glad for you that the shrink did not affect where you have it displayed. Again, beautiful quilt.

LOL!!! I did wash the fabric first!!! Maybe I should have washed it in hot water. Maybe the cotton batting shrunk the quilt.

Yes it is a Bichon! She cuddled up on the bed as soon as I put the quilt on it. She desperately needs a haircut from her groomer (me). I'd rather be quilting!

What type of batting did you use? Fabrics these days don't shrink as much as they did years ago. But cotton batting does shrink as does wool. It is lovely. I am glad it shrunk to just right

wraez 01-18-2013 07:28 PM

so pretty and looks like a Bichon? enjoying the comforts of a lovely quilt.

I bought cotton batting by the yard at Joann's. I am not sure of the brand. I expected some shrinkage but not that much. LOL! All's well that ends well! Thanks!

I was also surprised that the red dye was still running. I washed the reds three times and the blues and greens at least once, maybe twice before cutting the them. The quilt now has a cozy and comfy look and the quilting pops! Again, all's well that ends well!

Yes, that's my 7 year old Bichon! As I wash each layer of bedding and put it back on the bed, she's up there cuddling the pillows. I don't let her directly on my pillowcase, ew. But...I will let her on the other covers. Thanks for the compliments!!!

catladyquilts 01-19-2013 06:12 AM

It looks like your quilt inspector has taken it over, very nice.

I never wash my fabrics.....that would require taking time from quilting. Besides I love the look and feel of a quilt after it shrinks a bit. When I make a quilt for sale, I wait till after I've washed it to measure it for the label. I've never had one shrink down that much, though, even when I've used 100% cotton. Thank goodness it's now the right size.

grammysharon 01-20-2013 06:55 AM

This is why I wash all my fabric before it goes in the stash!!

Was the shrinkage due to the batting choice? I preshrink the bamboo/cotton batting I use. Otherwise the batting shrinks too much.

BrendaK 01-20-2013 07:11 AM

It sure is pretty. BrendaK

I always calculate an extra 4% when I determine size and I always pre-wash. I've lost as much as 5" on a king quilt even afterwards.

The blues and greens and focus fabric were washed at least once, maybe twice and the reds were washed 3 times. After reading the comments, I am sure it was the batting. It was cotton and bought by the yard at Joann's.

After reading the comments I am sure it was the batting. To say the least, it was shocking. But all is well. It's the right size for the bed now. :)

This is very good advice. I'm piecing another king size now and I will make sure I prewash the batting!

maryb119 01-20-2013 09:46 AM

I preshrink my batting too. I prefer Warm and Natural so I put it in the washer with hot water and let it soak (do not agitate) until it is all wet and then just spin out the water and put it in the dryer. If it is going to shrink, I want it to shrink before I make the quilt. Cotton batt will shrink some. I also prewash all fabrics, too. I don't want any surprises.

pinkcastle 01-20-2013 10:29 AM

Looks like another quilt claimed by a fur baby! Nice job.

DeneK 01-20-2013 11:09 AM

Love your quilt... love your Bichon too. We have 4 Bichons in our pack, not show-groomed either.:D

Chasing Hawk 01-20-2013 11:16 AM

Very lovely quilt and your cute inspector looks so comfortable.

I am in the process of making 4 quilts for our grandkids. I prewashed everything yesterday and spent the whole afternoon ironing everything.
