Today is the one year anniversary of my mother's death. I live far away from the rest of the family, so decided to celebrate by make a quilt that reminds me of Mom.
I am calling this Understated Elegance.
Mom was a great lady and she was in charge of the Officer's wives club so she would throw these very elaborate parties dressed to the nines and make it look so easy.
She would also organize a neighborhood barbeque with enough food to feed the state, and make everyone feel as if they were special.
She used to say she was nothing but a mom.... but oh how much that title ment went referencing everything she did.
So here is my quilt, and yes my son is hiding behind it again this time.

colors are grey, yellow, black paisley

I lost my mom in May of 2006...found out she was going to leave us on Mother's day that year....

I may copy your idea...I can't think of a more fitting tribute to the woman that taught me how to sew! Your quilt is beautiful...and it sounds to me like your mother was too! I'm so glad you had her for the time that you did! :)

Beautiful! I love the way the paisley appears to float on the surface!

I loved reading your tribute--your words, and the quilt in her honor/memory--are perfect.

It is always very painful when we lose our mothers. Mine died on Mother's Day, 2002. I will miss her for as long as I'm here. Your mother would have been very touched to see your quilt in her remembrance.

I lost my mother a year ago this Easter. I too made a quilt to remind me of her. I still have to finish the binding then will post a picture. Mom lived in our home for 10 years & I took care of her so it still hurts a lot but the good memories are beginning to creep in - can't wait till they just take over!

paintedquilt 04-11-2010 06:04 AM

Beautiful

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 04-11-2010 06:25 AM

Pretty quilt. Your mom sounds like someone I'd like to be some day. I always admire those elegant lady types, but I can never pull it off.

Teacup 04-11-2010 06:31 AM

Maggie_Sue 04-11-2010 06:34 AM

I'm sorry for your lose Polly. I will keep my eye out for your quilt pictures.
Mom used to say that she just refused delivery of bad thoughts and feelings. So now when I catch myself I think of her burying a pan in the back yeard 2 hours before a formal dinner because she burned the food and didn't have time to scrub it. I can still picture her in a dress with a shovel and a still smoking pan.
Then my day is better until next time. So maybe if you find a specific memory that you can recall when things get tuff.

As I sit here wiping my tears, I realize how easy it is to take things for granted. Although I spoke to her last night, I'll be calling my mom as soon as I know she has returned home from church. Thank you all for the reminder. They are beautiful words for the special women in your lives.

saf45 04-11-2010 08:45 AM

just a big thank you for the inspiration you have given me.

pookie ookie 04-11-2010 10:23 AM

Wonderful tribute. Your mom reminds me of my gran, the greatest Marine Corps wife ever. :0) Worked full time her entire life, was the hostess with the mostest, spanking clean house, respectable children... hard work!

clem55 04-11-2010 11:07 AM

It will be 39 years on May2 for me, and I still miss Mom so much. I don't believe we ever get over that. But I talk over all my problems with her, and she gets me through all of them. I can usually hear her say just what I "know" I need to hear. LOL Sounds as if we all had great Moms.

Lisa 04-11-2010 11:12 AM

Your quilt is beautiful, what pattern is that?

GrannyW5 04-11-2010 11:29 AM

The quilt pattern is based off of a block in quilters cache called squares within squares 2.

b.zang 04-11-2010 12:58 PM

STEMSAM 04-11-2010 01:30 PM

Yes. I know what you mean, for me it's been 17 years this year. I remember a women I knew at the time, told me just that. she was 78 and still missed her Mother, who had been gone for almost 40 years.
the pain eases with time, and memories take over.

MamaBear61 04-11-2010 06:21 PM

Your fabric choices certainly capture the elegance that you remember about your mother

dkabasketlady 04-11-2010 07:57 PM

What a beautiful quilt and a wonderful tribute to your DM!

Sewnique 04-12-2010 05:31 AM

Ladies,
I am sorry for all of you with your loss. I still have my Mother but, health is not good. I lost my Dad 25 years ago and it seems like last week sometimes. He was my best friend. Never judged me when I made mistakes, and I made and still make, plenty of them. Just had a way or steering me right without saying this IS what you are going to do. Having said all this, I pray that each of you will have comfort and those invisible arms will wrap around you and hold you in a way only a parent can do!
Bootsie
