Replacement Professional Tote

2 Attachment(s)
I just gave this professional tote to my GF for her birthday. She requested it special as she's literally worn out the one that I made for her several years ago. As I've made several, I've made some modifications to the directions and as a result I'm doing these a little bit differently now. On the main body parts of the bag I use the decor bond interfacing like the pattern calls for but I also apply fusible fleece to give the bag extra body. I also changed the two outer pockets on the ends of the bag that originally called for drawstring ties and I just switched them out to elastic. She said she never used the drawstring pockets at any different sizes so she just would rather have elastic. She really liked the improvements over her first bag.

Lovely tote! You did a wonderful job! I have the pattern, but have yet to tackle it . . . someday I hope to make one!

Love the fabric. I've started making them with Soft & Stable on the outer pieces instead of the decor bond and fleece. Makes them stand up nice.
A nice compliment to you that your friend wore out the other one. You are a true friend to make this.

Your tote is just great - and thanks for the info on the updating of the pattern that you used. Good info for us tote-makers.

very nice job!!!

Excellent! I would also use the simple interior pocket method vs. their "pleated" pocket with flap. While I loved doing ALL of the techniques...one really can get away with going back to tried and true methods used in other bags. I also used Soft & Stable on the outside pieces for stability and shape. great job!

I love it. The professional tote is my favorite.I also switched the drawstring on the end pockets to elastic. I couldn't find pretty colored cord locks for them and the price of cord locks is crazy. None of the jackets in our house have cord locks as I cut them all off to use on my totes. Then I got the idea of elastic.

I took a class to make this tote , the instructor also had us so the elastic for the side pockets. I made one for travel and one for a diaper bag for my daughter in law. The one thing I did do is have my fabric quilted by a LA gal before cutting my pieces for the bag. Its still my favorite bag....

tessagin 08-27-2016 03:15 AM

Love this tote!! Your choice of colors are great. Where can I get this pattern? I have fabric I would like to use!

I would just Google "Professional Tote pattern" - - I did that and came up with several sites. I'm not sure if it's allowed that I post something like that on the board but a few that came up were Annie's, E-Bay, MSQC......it's an awesome pattern!

That's a great idea to have it quilted first! I may have to do that on my next one, which, coincidentally, is, like yours, going to be a diaper bag for my step-daughter. I'm so excited to go choose the fabrics!

I felt the same way about the options out there for cord locks - - all I could ever find were black or white....blah!

That's a good idea to change out the inner pockets too. Hope you don't mine if I use it. The next one I make is going to be a diaper bag and I think I'll use that pocket style for that one. New new mom is ever going to want to mess with the flap on that pleated pocket! LOL
