Requests For Pictures of My Avatar Quilt

9 Attachment(s)
Lately, I have been receiving several requests to post pictures of my avatar quilt. It is an antique quilt made by a very talented quilter, Mrs. Ruth Dixon of Shelby, Tennessee. It was made around 1936 and is hand made and quilted. I have been priviledge to have 3 large quilts Mrs. Dixon made in the early 1930's and a baby quilt she did for her daughter in 1929. Unfortunately, Mrs. Dixon was paralyzed in the early 1940's and she was unable to quilt after that time. She passed away in 1976. The ladies in the picture of the Southern Belle quilt are ladies from my quilt guild who dressed up for our quilt show as they were in charge of the Heritage quilt section. I am sad to say that the Southern Belle quilt is in the process of being sold. (financial reasons) I feel it is going to a wonderful home in another country as the lady wants to put it up for her daughter. I have really enjoyed having this quilt for the last 7 or 8 years. I am now going to share the pictures I have of Mrs. Dixon's quilts. I will also post a picture of a quilt that was hand pieced out of men's shirts. It was made by my DH's great grandmother and is now celebrating it's 100th birthday this year. It was not quilted, it was hand tied. It is still in remarkably good condition.

I love the way the scallopped border was done. It looks crooked in the picture but it is very straight.

This quilt received a first place blue ribbon in our large quilt show in the Heritage division.

All of Mrs. Dixons quilts that I have the priviledge of owning seem to be made with
the same sashing material. Must have been her favorite or some that she had a lot of.

This is the baby quilt that Mrs. Dixon made for her daughter in 1929. The true color is somewhere between the two pictures.

Last is the picture taken of the quilt made by my DH's great grandmother Higby in New York in 1912. When my MIL passed away in 2007, my hubby went to Florida to remodel her home so that we could sell it. Unfortunately, the market fell out and we still own it. He called me one afternoon and said, "Honey, we were cleaning out the garage and found an old trunk in the loft. In it was a quilt my great grandmother Higby made in 1912. Do you want it?" I excitedly said, "You don't have it in the car yet?"
Then he said a very shocking statement, "No, Natalie (our 3 year old granddaughter) is playing on it in the concrete driveway". I made it known he needed to immediately get the quilt and put it up until he was to leave. LOL

I am sorry the picture is not a better one but the color of the solid material is a blue/grey and the light material is white with thin navy stripes and some with navy blue plaid and some with a navy blue print in it. It has one small area around the edge that is damaged (wearing out) and I just lightly tacked it down so it wouldn't damage further.
Hope you enjoy my post. Thanks
