My dad came over this afternoon to help work on some plumbing problems at my house. He had just picked up several 4' x 8' sheets of coroplast for my sister's vinyl graphics business. When I went out to his truck, I about croaked. Covering the plastic was a QUILT! He had grabbed it from his brother's place (which used to be my grandmother's home before she passed away two years ago.) He told me that my uncle wanted to get rid of all my grandma's quilts, so he was just going to use it for a junk blanket. I quickly swapped him the quilt for an old carpet to cover the plastic sheets in his truck.
I did ask him if he could get me the rest of the quilts from my uncle so that nothing like this would happen again. The quilt below is machine quilted, with applique centers. It looks like it has been free-motion quilted with a long-arm, so it probably is not that old, but I really don't care. (I rescued a quilt from my uncle's a few years ago because he was using it as a dust cover over a couch in storage. That one was made by my great grandmother and even though it needed repair, I still wanted it.) My daughter has claimed this quilt for her bedroom... so she is trying it out. Good for you for rescuing the quilts.
Your children look like they get along well and I think this quilt will be perfect for your daughter. :D |

Great quilt!!! And a family quilt too!!! I hope you are able to get the rest too.
What a wonderful quilt. I'm so glad you saved it. Your kids are so cute.
So glad you were able to rescue the quilt before it was too late!!!
Beautiful quilt! Save all you can!
It is amazing how little people care about the love and work that goes into a quilt. Hope you get the rescue the rest.
Thank goodness you saw it before it got messed up. That's a really nice quilt. I'm still trying to find out what happened to all the quilts my grandmother made and had stashed in her closet. I wonder which cousin has them or if they got put in the pile of trash to burn when the house got cleaned out. No telling!

EEEKKKKK! I would have freaked too! Great save, hope you get the others too.
This quilt is pretty! |
Holy smokes!! I'm glad you rescued it!!!! I sure hope you get the rest of your grandmothers quilts!!!!!!!
Oh gosh, sooo fortunate you just happened to see it in the truck!
Wow, that's a great quilt!
I have to admit, my reaction on seeing your thread title was a groan. I've been thinking that not all quilts need to be rescued. Some were made for utility, and if they get damaged or used up in the process, hey, that's what they were for. Your quilt doesn't fit that category, and judging by it, I'm betting the others from that lady's hands won't either. So I'm very glad you're rescuing them, and I hope you'll post photos of the others when you get them - with your kids, of course! (Maybe your son will find one he likes, too.) |
Great rescue! Cute kids!
I think it is interesting how they (as in my dad and my uncle) can think nobody would want the quilts because they don't. I bet my grandmother would cry if she saw how her three boys have treated her "treasures" in this way. My grandmother didn't have much, but what she did have was nice. I am also going to get two antique chairs that were my great, great grandfather's from her house as soon as my uncle will part with them. Right now, one of them is used for a clothes holder in the bedroom. I shudder to think how two years worth of his using them might have damaged them.
I am looking forward to seeing more quilts and those chairs...you need to start a good friendship with uncle ;-)
Great rescue!
Hope you get the rest.... |
wow too pretty to be wasted Rescue them :!:
Doesn't it make you want to spit when you see how some people treat old quilts :?:
YIKES!!! Do they even realize how many hours someone put into this project??? I would be jumping up and down using words a lady should not say..............

Oh gee... I can't believe it! What are people thinking? It just makes you want to cry thinking how much work and money went into this quilt to have it treated like a rag. I am hoping my quilts are treasured, but I guess you never know.
Great quilt and cute kids. THey are pretty happy lying there on that quilt. |
So glad you are saving these quilts....this one is certainly much too nice to cover up something in the back of a truck!~! Your kids look like they appreciate it, too. Good for you!!
OMG - I'm glad you could rescue this lovely quilt.
Were you able to rescue any others from your uncle?
Okay, I think you need to have a talk with your uncle and slap him upside his punkin' head! Hope you get to go in and collect whatever might be valuable. Get him a cheapy chair and a bedspread from Walmart! He'll be just as happy with it!

I will have to wait until my dad goes back to visit (which is about once or twice a month) and hopefully be able to meet up with him. My uncle is not going to let me take the chairs without my dad asking him to let me have them. He says he doesn't want to replace furniture if it is removed. My grandmother has an antique table and curio cabinet too that my cousin would like to see preserved. |

I sure hope you get the rest of the quilts, as well as the furniture, rescued. It is so sad that male children don't often know the "heart" value of their mother's or grandmother's things.
My mom called today and told me my dad is going over to his brother's on Monday to get the rest of the quilts. She rarely prompts my dad like this, but when she saw the picture of the quilt and heard the story, she got really upset. I guess she really berated my dad for even thinking about using the quilt as a junk blanket. She said my great grandmother made this quilt several years go. (She was really close to my dad's mom and grandma.) The quilt was made in early 70s or late 60s. That makes it all the more precious. My great grandmother died when I was a little girl from surgery complications and I hardly remember her. I can tell from the lack of wear and tear on this quilt that my grandmother must have thought it very special because she didn't use it. (She used things she didn't care much about and saved all the things she did.)

Are you kidding me? I would march over to his house right this minute and scour the place and grab every quilt I could find. Then give him a good talking to.
