Ringo's Sister
3 Attachment(s)
This is my third Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt. This year I changed my colors including switching the light and dark. When all the units were finished and we got Bonnie's reveal I liked hers a lot, but while we were waiting I had been playing w/ different ways the pieces could all be laid out and was really drawn to one of my "play layouts". I am calling this Ringo's Sister b/c it has all the same units of On Ringo Lake and in nearly the same %. I did add a hst, and there are fewer of the neutral / dark FG and a few more of the other FG. So the same "dna" but in a different configuration like a "sister". ORL has an en point layout, mine has a square layout that appears to be en point. When it got to the border I needed something that would hold it's own but not visually compete w/ the busy center, so I decided to do this simple, but dramatic border, my first curved border. I enjoyed playing in the mystery, and love many of the ORL quilts the way Bonnie envisioned them, but am equally in love w/ my version.
The back is a pieced back from a thrift store striped sheet. It is assembled and quilted on my domestic machine w/ a quilt as you go technique. It finishes 72 x 90 |
That's lovely! You know who I think of every time I see the word Ringo, right? :D
Yep, same as I do one of the "Fab 4"

Very pretty quilt.

Really lovely version of ORL. Great job on the scallop borders. Those can be tricky.
Good job!!
Fabulous! Great creativity on this~

That came out so beautiful, Kass! I love your version! And that super scalloped border is amazing. Have no idea how you did that.
Wow, wow, wow! Fabulous. |
What a fantastic finish! I have admired your unique fabric selection, layout re-design and the specific techniques you've used since the very beginning of the the ORL mystery. It's been so much fun to watch and I appreciate all I've learned through the process. Ringo's Sister is a beauty :)

Wonderful job Kassaundra, I love how you changed up the colors in your ORS and your scalloped borders in both quilts.
Great quilt Kassaundra! That border really sets it off.
So you say this is your first curved border? Then you have to go over the top and make it double. Brave - but you knocked it out of the park.
You used a striped sheet on the back? What pattern did you use to cut it into those interesting squares? Is it a disappearing pattern? |
wow, fantastic layout. Love the scalloped edge!
Beautiful! I love the shape! :)
Looks great!
Ohhh hope you email photos to Bonnie and tell her this story. Its beautiful !
Oh my Kass you hit another one out of the ballpark. It is fabulous.
Your free form scallop border is awesome!! As well as your execution of this entire quilt, but boy that edge treatment really makes it stand out. Especially with the addition of the light blue bias strip. The back is great too.
It turned out wonderful! Love it
When you put your own twist on patterns, they become even more special. I am not familiar with Bonnie Hunter's quilt, but I seriously doubt that it is prettier than yours.
amazing quilt

Yes the back was a striped sheet, I cut it like the Missouri Star quartered square triangle. basically 4 strips wof (I think I did 10 inches b/c it worked for the size of the fabric), cut the 4 layered strips into squares (so for this 10 inches) then cut each diagonal and sew each stack of 90 degree triangles back into squares. Half your squares will be concentric stripes and half will be the other shape. Arrange them in "checker board" layout and violla.
