Hi:
Just finished my queen-sized scrappy Roman Stripe quilt top which was inspired by someone else's Roman Stripe that was posted sometime back. Can't find who posted the inspirational one but if you know who you are, THANK YOU!

I also finished another scrappy top which is for a double bed. I'll give this one to my nephew for a cuddle utility quilt.

Feathers - I really like the scrappy/string diamond shaped quilt. Was it from a pattern?

live2teach 02-06-2008 04:19 AM

Those are both beautiful quilts. They are both so bright and colorful! Great Job! :)

Hi Nano:
Thanks for identifying yourself as the inspiration for my Roman Stripe. I love it and I've about decided it'll stay on my bed. I still have to sandwich and finish it but was excited about "showing it off." I sewed many long 2 or 3 inch strips together the long way then subcut them in 5 inch widths to make the stripes.

The border on the other scrappy quilt is just LEFT OVER half square triangles that I've collected in a bag for years from other projects. WE grew up poor and I learned early in life you DO NOT waste anything that you might be able to use later. So, when I made this scrappy quilt I decided to sew each of those little half sq. triangle buggers together and make a border for the quilt. I like the look and will probably do it again in the future. I just took some pictures so will come back and post them when I get them off the camera.

Hi AnnMarie:
We didn't have a pattern. At our quilt group meeting we take turns doing a "program" which is just teaching the rest of the group how to make a new block. The program that this scrap quilt came from was just such a quilt. We were told to gather up our "scraps" and sew them in strips as wide as you wanted your block to be but it was suggested that we have at least 12 1/2 inches wide strips then we cut each long strip into 12 1/2 inch square BLOCKS. We then cut each of these 12 1/2 inch squares cross-wise from corner to corner ("X" cut corner to corner). Now we have 4 triangles. Throw all the triangle in a bag and pulled them out and sew them to another triangle from another strip section to make new square. My blocks are sewn on point then I used the left over triangles to fill in at the corners and around the edges. Very easy and fun and this particular quilt I put high loft batting in the sandwich so it's very soft and nice. My nephew is going to love it as he's our little quilt guy...he's a cuddler and wants a lap and a quilt to tuck around him. He's 8 years old and getting big for my lap but he still likes it! :D

OK, have the pictures downloaded for the detail on the borders for the Scrappy Quilt, AnnMarie. Hope you can see what I' ve done.

I just love scrappy quilts and yours are exceptional!! :D

Feathers 02-06-2008 10:53 AM

Thank you, Tricia. I love scrappy, too. Your kind comments make my head swell.

barnbum 02-06-2008 06:59 PM

There's a great scrap user!! Bravo!! They look like wonderful ways to keep warm. :D

annmarie 02-06-2008 07:48 PM

Feathers - thank-you, thank-you, thank-you for the close ups. I just love that quilt! Gonna have to make one. Thanks for the explanation.

nanabirdmo 02-07-2008 08:34 AM

feathers, thanks for the additional pics. your quilts are spactacular. i am ashamed that i have thrown away so many little triangles. no more. you are my inspiration.

Chele 02-07-2008 08:36 AM

I adore scrappy quilts! Yours are wonderful! :D

nanabirdmo 02-07-2008 08:40 AM

feathers, i love the part about your little grandson loving to snuggle. i have a snuggly grandson, too. he is 16 now and thinks he is too big to do much snuggling with nana. but we spent many hours snuggling and reading or watching one of his videos. enjoy him, you are lucky to have each other.

BDor 02-07-2008 08:45 AM

LOVE- LOVE - LOVE the scrappy quilts. I need to do this to use up all my scraps. But I strongly dislike half square triangles. Just don't know if I could make that many.lol

BDor 02-07-2008 08:49 AM

I forgot to ask how you are going to quilt them. That is something I have a hard time deciding. Guess I just haven't been quilting long enough yet.

3incollege 02-07-2008 08:54 AM

Feathers, I love both the quilts, they looked fun to make I should gather my scrapes and get busy. Love it.

quiltmaker101 02-07-2008 11:17 AM

Well, Feathers, you have met the 2008 Scrappy Quilt Challenge X 2 !!!

Great job! Both are excellent and I like the HST border. Did you make it from trimming and saving the scraps there too?

I like them very much. Can't wait to see what others post for the Challenge as well.

Wendy

Feathers 02-07-2008 12:34 PM

Bdor, you don't "Make" the half square triangles special for this ...you SAVE all the half SQ triangles from every other project you've made in your life and when you have a bunch, sew them together and Joila! you have a sashing.

Feathers 02-07-2008 12:57 PM

Quiltmaker:
I don't know about the 2008 Challenge. I guess I'd better try to find out about it. Would I find it on the MAIN board? The border is from all the HST from all the projects I've ever made. If I wanted another color or added a scrap that wasn't in the HST bag, I'd make up one or two with that fabric but like DBor...I HATE to make the HST just to be making them but I'll SAVE them whenever I can.

DBor, you asked how I would quilt it. Haven't quilted it yet but think I'll do a stitch the ditch again as I'm having some success with that right now.

Thank you all for the nice comments. My head swelleth!

judithb 02-07-2008 01:04 PM

I do like these quilts! Gives me an idea of how to use my "extra pieces."
Thanks for posting the pictures.

Both quilts are wonderful!

Please forgive the total "newbie" question, but how did you come to arrangements of the colors? Was it a carefully thought out thing? Or did you just kind of put them together and went with what looked good? (I ask because I'm having the hardest time choosing complimenting colors and finding a nice way to arrange them...)

Feathers 02-07-2008 03:49 PM

Hi Rising Pheonix:
Welcome to the Board. You will just love all the folks on this board and you will have INFINITE help from hundreds of people as near as your keyboard.

Your questions:
My scrappy quilts are completely random. I tried NOT to put colors next to each other that screamed at each other but that's about it. I was told when I was a newbie to NOT OVER THINK a scrap quilt so I don't!

No question is a dumb question UNLESS IT ISN'T ASKED! Ask your questions because we're all here to help.

On a quilting scale of 1 to 10...10 being the artist/ best quilter on Board I'd fall in the area of about a 3 or 4! I tend to like beginner projects but have done intermediate and advanced quilts. Like the begin/intermediates the best. As a new quilter, you may not know that every quilt you make will teach you TONS for the next project. Each project allows you to see your growth and improvement and that's always wonderful. Also, being able to show your work and maybe having a few OHHHS and AHHHHS and helpful critiques (when you ask for them) also helps you learn.

Welcome, look forward to meeting you on the board often.

Feathers

Great scrappy quilts! I guess you won the challenge! Congrats

Feathers 02-07-2008 05:55 PM

Quiltmaker:
Thank you, I just added a note to the quilt challenge thread that I wanted to be a [part of the 2008 challenge. I will donate my quilts to the Protective Services Agency for foster kids...last year our quilt group made and donated over 50 quilts to the foster kids.

RisingPhoenix 02-07-2008 05:59 PM

Thanks for the response and the welcome! Don't over think the colors...I'll remember that. (It'll also make it easier for me to get started on my first quilt! )

Feathers 02-07-2008 08:31 PM

Sandpat...I just read the challenge thread and i don't think they are going to chose the winner of the challenge until Dec. 2008 so NO, I haven't won it but thanks for the vote of confidence!

busy fingers 09-30-2012 12:41 PM

Two gorgeous scrappies. Well done

TacoMama 09-30-2012 12:46 PM

You did a good job, but I was thinking I was going to find a quilt with black on one side and color strips on the other like an Amish quilt I saw made. I guess there are different patterns for Roman stripe quilts. Thanks for posting.
