Round Dresden Plate Tablecloth

5 Attachment(s)
Just mailed off a 60" diameter round tablecloth for my DH's 91-year-old aunt. She uses a 48" round table to eat on (and probably everything else) so I made four coordinating reversible placemats to go with it.

Seems like I learn something from every project, which is good, but just once I'd like to finish something without saying "if I were doing it over again I would do XXX differently." I am curious whether others who make Dresden Plates cut away the bottom layer once the plate is appliqued on (I think mine might have stayed flatter if I had...although it looked fine until I did the quilting).

Regardless, I'm pleased with the results. I am definitely not a perfectionist (done is better than perfect).

I used a large wedge ruler and did the quilting on my Janome 6600 machine. The feathers came out pretty well (better than the center design). I'm learning!

Thanks for looking.

That's really pretty. Hope you don't mind me asking, what size wedge did you use? Also, do you know what the finished diameter of the topper was? I'd really love to make one of those for myself!

Finished diameter is 60". I used a 10 degree wedge ruler (hence 36 wedges, made from 12 different fabrics), wedges cut at the 19" mark (so the Dresden Plate was 38" diameter).

Dresden plate is one of my favorite patterns. Love your colors on this great looking quilt. As far as trimming the bottom layer after applique, I haven't got that far with mine yet and haven't decided.

Very nice- The back looks as good as the front and the placemats are handy for if the topper needs washed. Good thinking I'm sure she'll love them all

Love your dresden plate, it is beautiful. Always wanted to make a round one as my dining room table is round.

It looks absolutely lovely to me!!!

What a bunch of work in this quilt. I wonder if it lays flat enough that glasses and etc do not tend to wobble on it? I would put a clear plastic cover on it so nothing gets spilled. The table cloth is just awesome in colors and work.

cindy4857 07-21-2012 08:19 PM

wow I really like the table cloth. beautiful.

Ohh, that is so pretty. Great idea and great job on the quilting.

sassy granny 07-22-2012 10:31 AM

I didn't see anyone else answer your question as to cutting out the back, so here's my take on it. I have always cut out the back and it does make the top lay flatter and easier to quilt through.

It looks really lovely and I'm sure that she will greatly appreciate your lovely work.

IzzysGrammie 07-22-2012 04:40 PM

I LOVE this!! As i've said before, the Dresden is my favorite pattern. I've only used the 6" wedge so far, but am going to try this myself. Thank you for sharing!!

burchquilts 07-23-2012 12:21 AM

I love, love, love everything about this project of yours! The colors/fabrics are beautiful! Dresden Plate has always been one of my favorites & I've made quite a few. I've never trimmed the fabric underneath the plates but then again, mine weren't as large as yours.

Jammin' Jane 10-16-2012 10:36 AM

WOW! Very pretty! :)

SherriB 10-16-2012 01:38 PM

Gorgeous!!! You dresden is amazing!! I have been wanting to try a small dresden but haven't yet.
