Ruler tote

This was a project that I had signed up for at my guild's quilt conference last fall - unfortunately, there was only myself and one other gal that was interested so they canceled the class. The instructor hosts a Tuesday sewing circle and said that she would share & teach me the pattern whenever I wanted to attend - well, five months later I finally got around to it. I made it large enough to hold my 12" Shape Cut ruler, which actually measures 16" wide. I won the turquoise fabric at a guild meeting and used it to make the inside pocket for long/narrow rulers as well as binding the top edge. The smallest outside pocket is perfect for my binding tool and triangle trimmers as well as their instruction folders. Nice to have most of my rulers in one place and protected.

Oh, this is cute! I haven't thought of storing my rulers like this. I love the colors. I wonder if there's a pattern?

Love this ruler bag and that turquoise fabric is too darn cute. I have a mat bag but never thought of having a back just for rulers. Great idea - I think I will have to make one for myself. Thanks for sharing.

I would like to make one of these too for classes and workshops. You did a great job. I really like that fabric. Do you know who made it?

The instructions suggested one and one-half yards of prequilted fabric & a pack of rick-rack or other trims of your choice - I chose to bind the top edge with the turquoise fabric rather than turn under and trim with rick-rack. The measurements would depend on the size of the rulers you have. Otherwise, the pattern was really just a logical step construction - being sure to sew the small pocket to larger one before attaching to body of tote and sewing the inside pocket (with divisions) down before enclosing the tote. I eliminated a seam at the bottom by cutting a double long tote body and simply folding in half. The handles can be any length you are comfortable with - even long enough for over the shoulder if you wish. Velcro for the closure tab and tops of the outside pockets if you wish. One thing I might have done was position the outside pockets a little lower - they sag a bit when the tote is loaded and just sitting upright (like leaning on the wall).

Not sure which fabric you mean - but I don't know who the manufacturer is for either anyway. Got the black/white prequilted fabric at JoAnn's and there was not a name on the salvage for the turquoise. Don't know where it was purchased since I won it as a guild doorprise.

This link is to a free pattern from the Moda Bake Shop http://www.modabakeshop.com/2012/12/...n-bee-bag.html. The pattern is different, but serves the same purpose and is equally cute!

IBQLTN 03-20-2013 09:59 AM

Small world, I have that same pre-quilted fabric from JoAnns ... I made the Grommit Purse out of it.

Peggy Jeanne 03-20-2013 10:38 AM

Very nice, love the rick rack!

Canada Kate 03-20-2013 11:12 AM

Very cool and the colours pop. Well done!

quilt-n-girl 03-20-2013 12:28 PM

Love your tote, it turned out wonderful. I have never thought of using one for rulers, but it's a great idea. I make quilted totes, so I'll have to check it out and see if mine are big enough for all my rulers. Great job, keep up the good work.

Great idea for storing rulers and templates. Here I was thinking I was going to have to drive nails in my wall to hang them on!
