This is a 12 block sampler that I use in teaching beginner classes. I start with the easy 9-patch block and progress in difficulty with each block to triangles, y-seams, curves and finally applique. When they are finished, they have the skills to take any pattern from any book or magazine and make it!

I like this a LOT! Did you use a book with all the blocks in it?

No, I just designed my own blocks, except for the last applique block and that was something I traced from somewhere years and years ago. The rest just came from my head based on making most of these before. I just did some quick math in my head or on paper to make the blocks 12" finished and figured out what size I needed all the pieces.

Holy Canoli! That is some sampler! How long is your class? Just beautiful, and I can only imagine how excited your students are when they are finished.

I want to take your class! Mine did not include any curvy pieces at all.. we used the New Sampler Quilt book by Diane Leone and it was pick the ones you want to do I will help everyone on their blocks and as newbies.. you go for the easier ones and with twenty students what teacher could stop and teach each and every different pattern to each student in six classes? I am to this day scared to death of those curvy pieces and avoid them. love them but avoid them.

As for the question about how long my class was, it was designed to be a 14 week class ($10 per 2 hour class) with the 12 blocks, then the sashing and cornerstones and finally, the borders. But all of my ladies wanted to make a queen size quilt, so I continued to bring block patterns and the class went on for a year and a half! A second class was only 9 or 10 weeks since we were moving, so we did 2 blocks per class the last few weeks to get it all done before I moved. I really think it was an ideal way to teach beginners. They learned a new technique with each block.

Just like everything else in quilting, curves are only scary until you learn to do them. They aren't hard, just a little more time consuming. As long as you learn how to place your pieces and pin, pin, pin, they are a breeze!

I think it is great to have the same teacher for that long. We all have different techniques and it can be confusing in the beginning.

Thank you! I love teaching and I especially love teaching beginners and children. It's so much fun to see that passion being born and see them get hooked on quilting and excited to make their next quilt. When my ladies would bring in quilts that they were making on their own I felt like a proud mama!!
