beautiful fabric! Those are my favorite colors anyway. I made a block off of the delaware blocks and had the same problem but I thought it was just me as I am such a beginner.

greencat 08-30-2010 02:08 PM

I've found I really had to be careful with the 1/4". My most accurate blocks were with a 'scant' 1/4 (which I had to practice & measure quite a bit to get it right!)

JoanneS 08-30-2010 02:17 PM

Your block is BEAUTIFUL and BEAUTIFULLY sewn. I love the roses fussy cut for the center 4-patch.

And I think the scant-1/4" is the answer, because you've clearly been careful about matching and pressing.

oneygirl 08-30-2010 02:34 PM

Thank you. I ripped that block apart several times and just could not get it any larger. I put it in a box with some other extra blocks and will try another!

Check out Sharon Schamber's website. She has really good directions there for how you can block your block and bring it up to the size that you want if it is not too much smaller. It would be worth a tr4y. Your block is lovely.

oneygirl 08-30-2010 05:53 PM

Thank you! Do you have the link to her website?

oneygirl 08-30-2010 05:55 PM

Thank you, I have a Bernina Activa that is computerized!

Sharon has quite a few helpful tidbits to make blocks more accurate. I have only watched the free classes but have learned a lot!

joan gaddis 08-31-2010 06:20 AM

that is beautiful just love it

kellen46 08-31-2010 08:42 AM

I checked out the instructions, whew all those small fractions give me a pain in the tuchus. I usually round up the nearest whole, half or quarter inch and then trim back to the needed dimensions. I do this because Eleanor Burns, my guru, does it and she is very good at quilting. Besides who can see those 7/8 marks on the ruler..not me.

Lilrain 08-31-2010 12:40 PM

If it is just short, you may be able to spray it and block it to get the size you desire. Worth sa try

schwanton 08-31-2010 03:21 PM

I don't know how short it is, but you can always add a border around the edges to make it 12-1/2". Very pretty - pink and green are my favorite colors.

waquilter 08-31-2010 05:12 PM

It is beautiful. Your colors and so soft.

On my Bernina Activa with the 57 foot or 37 foot I have to move the needle one position to the right to make a scant 1/4 inch seam to get blocks to finish to the right size.

Calico Grammy 08-31-2010 05:37 PM

Really like your choice of fabrics! Very pretty!

This does not lend itself to accurate block sizes just because of the fold when we iron the seams. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. LOL.

Yes, I agree sometimes the pressure foot is heavy.....btw....Watson is absolutely adorable, what breed is he? Thanks,
MaryAnna

You are right - it is beautiful. I love, love the Aviary collection from Moda. Got a couple charm packs and sure wish I had gotten more. Sorry your block is a little small. :-(

Thanks for the tip! I have a Bernina Activa 220 and was wondering why my blocks were off. In this Month's Quilter's World magazine there's a detailed article about how to make sure you've got a true 1/4 seam and when you find that 'sweet spot' of the perfect 1/4 " seam, then mark it on your machine- or in your case, move the needle one position closer. Great tip!
Kind Regards,
MaryAnna

Great colors.

wvdek 08-31-2010 10:56 PM

Since your block is not the right size, please place in envelope and send my way as the colors are perfect for me! lol

Girl it is beautiful. Just make all the other blocks the same and keep on till quilt is made.
Ok, so maybe that won't work, but how far off is it? If you said I didn't catch that.

Your finished block is to be 12" or 12 1/2"? Sometimes it is a matter of not using the same ruler each time you make a cut, or cutting to the inside or outside of the line instead of right on the line, a million reasons. Even if your wrong if you are consistant, all the blocks will come out the same.

Make sure you post pics when completed. Sure is purdy.

angelanicole 09-01-2010 01:17 AM

Have this happen to me lots of times even with the 1/4" seam foot on my machine. I fixed this problem by cutting the sq. just a few threads larger or 1/8" larger and when finished cut to size, if it is important for the size of the quilt. Most of the time it is not.
By the way your fabric/color choice for this block is beautiful.

wildyard 09-01-2010 09:20 AM

you can always put a small band around each block with one of the greens to make it the 12 1/2.

dphelps 09-01-2010 12:23 PM

Pretty, pretty!

oneygirl 09-04-2010 04:08 PM

thank you!

http://delawarequilts.com/BOMs/Sawtooth/index.html

Checking the instructions you used, they recommend a true 1/4" seam allowance. You really need to use a scant quarter inch because the fold of the fabric, and the thread take up just a tiny bit of fabric. Check the finished size of your center squares, each should measure 3" square. The center 4-patch unit should measure 6" square. If they don't that will help you see how the seam allowance may be affecting the size of your blocks. You don't think that a couple of threads width in the seam allowance might make such a huge difference. <G>

Good luck,
Pati, in Phx.

BrendaB 09-07-2010 07:45 PM

Oneygirl, it is so nice of you to break it down like this. Makes it easier to check. :-)

watson's mom 03-17-2011 09:16 AM

Love your block and the colours. I always cut my squares about 1/16" bigger to allow for the seam and stitching and measure after cutting. I also have started using Best Press' spray starch and it does make a big difference.

katyquilter 03-17-2011 09:19 AM

Really nice color choices!!

ann clare 03-17-2011 09:20 AM

Lovely block

sweet 03-17-2011 10:24 AM

HST is "half square triangle"

Vickymomof6 03-17-2011 10:37 AM

My blocks almost always come out 12 1/4? Not sure why but they are all the same so I don't worry about it.

lmc8 03-17-2011 10:40 AM

This is what I did to fix my 11 year old daughter's BOM blocks that ended up too small and/or as wonky squares. I drew and cut the true sized square from a sheet of wax paper, then layered it centered under each block with wax side & back of block together, drenched it with Best Press spray so that is wet but not soaked which relaxed the fibers, gently tugged and pinned the edges of the block to meet or surpass the edge of the wax paper, then pressed it dry with an iron, trimmed away any excess fabric beyond the edge of the wax paper before seperating the block from the wax paper. It worked beautifully and fixed the block measurements by a whole 1/4" or more.
