Scrappy Postage Stamp Quilt
2 Attachment(s)
Earlier this summer I completed this 96" x 96"quilt for myself. I posted it on /r/quilting at that time, so apologies if you have seen it already. I haven't made many quilts and most of what I have made were for other people, so I was excited to have one for my bed.
I originally planned to make the entire thing postage stamps with some white sashing. I strip pieced the stamps and cut everything down. When got to the layout stage, what felt like a million squares was anything but. I had to get creative or make more stamps. I took the easy route and got creative :D Thanks for looking. Beautiful... just like little picture frames for some lovely quilted designs. I love all those tiny pieces.

I like the white space - your quilt looks great.
Love it! You did a great job.

Thanks sewbizgirl. I am not very skilled when it comes to the quilting part. I just used a serpentine stitch from top to bottom. I plan to hone my FMQ skills in the coming months and I hope to get decent at it.
Thank you Manalto and Eva :) |
beautifully done, love the layout

Lovely quilt!

Love it. Haven't seen a postage stamp done this way and this is a fresh idea.

So pretty. Great job!
Very nice!!!
Very pretty, and a creative way to use the postage stamps without doing it all in them.
Very pretty quilt. I do like your pattern.
Great looking scrappy quilt.
Great idea! Very fresh looking.
Love this!!! It's so original!
Fantastic layout and I can honestly say I have never seen it before. I would never make a postage stamp quilt the regular way but I certainly would consider one that looks like yours.
What a great idea and it turned out to be a fabulous quilt.
Love how your quilt turned out.
I made a postage stamp quilt many, many years ago, long before strip piecing. Cut out individual pieces and sewed them together in rows of 10X10 = 10 inch blocks then put it all together. Really love your layout and all the white background.....

Thank you for all of the lovely comments. If anyone wants to make this or something similar, I used this tutorial:
http://www.seamstobeyouandme.com/201...p-piecing-way/ I stopped at the "Chain 2" part. It was at that point that I knew I was in trouble. I ended up laying everything out and trying to make it large enough and interesting enough without making more stamps. This was the layout I settled on: Then I just cut pieces of white at 8.5" x 4.5" to fill the centers: Then I added 11.5' x 8.5" white squares in the center and some 2.5" sashing between the rows: Finally I kept adding borders until it was the size I wanted. I refused to buy extra fabric for it, so I just pulled whatever I had that I wanted to use up. All of the white is bleached 44" muslin and the backing is a flat sheet. The quilting part is simple serpentine stitches with almost equal spacing from top to bottom: |
Thank you for showing the quilting. It gives others confidence to have a go at the quilting rather than sending all their quilts to a longarmer.
I like your layout and it's such a good example of out-of-the-box thinking!
Sometimes a deviation is needed. Great result.
I'd say that's very creative! Good job.
Great idea! i like how you took it to the modern and fresh look. We certainly have creative quilters here on the Board.
