Scrappy Spring Basket runner
 

My DIL’s Mom sends me extra bits of fabric from the breast cancer pillows she makes, and her latest pieces were bright and cheerful. I love this pattern from Podunk Pretties...

So I added some fabrics and made a table runner to surprise her....well, it grew to almost 60” long, and it will not work on her table! Or mine. I am almost done with a pillow for her porch swing using this block instead.

I like the suggestion of a dresser scarf from sewnclog.
You might also consider cutting the runner in half (if you have enough fabric) and making 2 runners, one for your DIL's mother and one for your DIL or you or to gift someone.

What about using it on the back top edge of the couch? Or on a bed to cover the pillows after the bed is made. Then toss it to the foot of the bed at night to add extra warmth to the toes.
