darlene, here is the link to the braid method at QUILTER'S CACHE. if you are new to quilting you must bookmark this site. i can literally spend hours just looking at the different blocks and their examples of how to use them. all the patterns are free and they post new ones all the time. the braid is not exactly a block but a way of sewing strips together. it is really just a variation of a log cabin. only one sided. once you get started just keep adding strips until it is as long as you want it. you can either chop the ends or add triangles to finish. personally i usually chop. this is a very very simple way to sew strips together. have fun. |
barn, coming from someone of your quilting prowess i take that as high praise indeed. thank you.

hi lockeb, if you werent able to find the post about turkey tracks, this should get you there. it is much more clear than i could ever explain. this stitch is really an embroidery stitch. don't know the real name, maybe someone reading this could say. i don't do much embroidery. anyway, i hope this helps. good luck. |
Such a beautiful quilt to begin with but the turkey tracks just make it even more so. The tracks are so even, how far apart do you put them? Must do that on an embroidered rooster that I'm working on :D
thank you blue bird. if you saw the quilt up close the tracks are not exactly the same space apart. i just eyeball as i go along. somewhere around 5/8 to 3/4 inch is what i shoot for. give or take. lol. whatever looks good to you.

i do love log cabin.....but i think first thing in the morning, i'm gonna do some braiding.....and i don't mean my hair!
http://www.quilterscache.com/B/BraidBlock.html i do love the braids....and they are easy enough for me, just wonderful! |
Very pretty.

You did a great job on this quilt....
I just love everything about it...the design, the colors the whole idea is wonderful..... |
I love this quilt....and I am definitely going to be trying the Turkey Tracks quilting....I love the way it looks.
Wow! You make me want to handquilt. I thought I would never say that!
That is awesome. What a wonderful way to use up scraps.
Very nice!
I am beginning to really love scrappy quilts!
I'm hoping to start getting enough scraps to do something with - I know, I know, one would think that I would but I don't! |
wow, absolutely adorable!!
hi crafty deb, you would accumulate lots of scraps if, like me you were totally math challenged. i tend to decide on a quilt that i want to make then proceed to cut and stitch without bothering to calculate the total amount of fabric i will need. so i invariably have strips of each fab i use in the quilt left over. (i buy for my stash, not for a project so i buy several yds of every fabric that i like.) i just pretty much fly by the seat of my pants when it comes to creating a quilt. so my stash of scraps is humongous.   good thing i love scrappy quilts.lol
pvquilter, thanks for the kind words. no pattern here, i just sew strings together until it is as long as i want the quilt to be then start on the next row. i pay little attention to colors or whether the fab is seasonal or anything but i do pay a little attention to value.
have fun |
That is so cute! I have a ton of scraps. This is a great idea. Thanks for the inspiration.
I always love your scrap quilts! The turkey tracks are so pretty.
Very nice. I just started a braid quilt. A friend gave me a huge stash of
2" 30's repreduction fabrics so I started making a braid quilt. I really like how you did yours. Mine is actually in my UFO pile. I put it away for awhile to do something else then something came up and something after that so seeing yours makes me want to get back going on mine. Thanks for sharing. |
Beautiful quilt! I love the way you hand quilted it! :D
Nanabird your quilt is beautiful....I too fly by the seat of my pants when buying fabric and creating my designs (so glad I'm not alone in this...I feel a little guilty about it sometimes!). Always wondered about incorporating my love of embroidery into a quilt stitch. The name Turkey Tracks is a nice name for this stitch, I learned this stitch when I was young, and it was called Fly Stitch. Anyway, thank you for the great pictures and the mini-lesson....you have inspired me and many others I'm sure. Happy quilting.
Beautiful quilt. I love how you alternated the braids with the columns of horizontal strips.
I understand how you did the strips, but how did you do the braid section?

hi pvquilter, here is the link to the braid method. it is very simple. would love to see yours so come on and give it a go. great fun. :!:  |
Beautiful. I love the look of scrappy quilts. I bet she is going to love it.
You are inspiring me to try turkey tracks. Thanks.

i use crotchet thread, the kind that comes in a big round ball. it is what grandma used to make doilies. i find that embroidery floss is too much hassle, although i have used it. also pearl cotton but it is more expensive and a little heavier than i prefer. but there are no quilt police. i would suggest experimentation to see what you like. have fun, it is very satisfying. Another reason why this board is so wonderful. :D |
nanabirdmo,
I don't hand quilt much, but have a hand pieced that I'm planning to hand quilt. It's just a small quilt because I usually don't hand piece and wanted to try it. QUESTION What is turkey tracks quilting? It might be appropriate for my project. thanks, peel |
[quote=Eddie]That is sooooo pretty. You did such a good job on it![/quot
I cant say more  |
I don't think I saw this one, it beautiful!
????? explain/show sample of "turkey tracks". Tried to look it up but found nothing (but then, I'm not the brightest light on the tree sometimes).
Love it!! Where do I find a pattern for Turkey Tracks?
If I had read all post I would have realized "Turkey Track" is the quilting (duh) not the quilt pattern. I guess the pattern is friendship braid?
