Selvage tote

I love working with selvages! Here is the first one: https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...o-t212359.html After I made the bag, I became the recipient of many selvages from a generous quilter. So last fall I dug through the box of short selvages and started the fence rail sections for this bag at a fall quilt retreat. Then the selvage block panel hung on the design wall until I recently finished the tote (yeah!) and gifted it. Now to find a new selvage project!

Oh that is cute. I don't think i will save selvages again, but if i did, this would be one thing I would love to make!!
Love your bag. I keep saying I'm going to save my selvages but forget to do it when cleaning up.
Those are always the cutest projects. Love your bag and would have a hard time gifting it. Did you stitch the selvages to a background piece first?
I love, love, love this!!! The recipient is so very lucky and blessed, too!!!
you did a great job with those selvages
Rhonda, Yes, I sewed the selvages to muslin pieces that are the fence rail blocks that become the front panel for the large front pocket. Pinterest and YouTube have tons of selvage project ideas.

Ingenious. I throw away my selvages. You've repurposed your selvages very successfully.
! Great job!
Wow! This is really using every thread of your fabric! Beautiful!
Great idea...must try this...I have lots of selvages!
Super. BrendaK

I love it!! So cheery.
So pretty! After you make your pocket panel, do you back it with inter-facing to make it stiffer?
Waste not want not, what a wonderful way to use what most discard, well done!
Thanks for posting your tote bag! I especially like sewing the short strips on muslin pieces. Did you also use a stiffer interfacing for the lining or was the stiffness of the selvages enough?
Super cute bag!
Love your bag and anything made with selvages. Do I save mine? No, but I sure would like something made from them! Maybe one day:o
Unbelievable! Who would have thought a bag could look so nice and be as sturdy as the salvage edges of precious fabrics and be so beautiful! Job well done.
So cute! Great job! I have a hamper full of selvage waiting for such a project!
Very pretty tote and so unique on how you used the selvages. Great idea.

I followed the pattern directions using fusible fleece. I use fusible fleece in this bag pattern, too. https://wpcreek.com/collections/new-...six-pack-stack One side note on this bag is make sure it is a true FQ size as stated in pattern or better yet, cut from stash. This bag goes super quick but .... I was thinking of using diagonal selvage panels for the pockets. http://sewdelicious.com.au/2015/05/h...-tutorial.html
One more idea on selvage project from Sara (inspiring and energetic presentation)... https://sewsweetness.com/2017/10/vid...v=7516fd43adaa She links a YouTube video but before you view the video, you can view and download her pattern instructions by clicking on the BLUE text as she directs. She uses foam interfacing in this pouch as it makes the pouch much firmer. I used the Pellon foam product from Joann's. |
That is cute bag too!
Thanks for the tips and tutorials. I have a bag of them saved for making a project. Thanks for sharing yours! |
Selvage pouches

I've assigned myself the task of making a selvage pouch for each member of the 2.5 inch charm square swap. I went a different direction and decided to put together pouches based on the color of the selvages. I am about half way through the year and they are a lot of fun. The selvages are sewn onto what becomes the lining, across the diagonal. I am saving the 3 inch part I cut off of each to make a future quilt.

Creative additions are so motivating...
Thank you for sharing the pictures! Love your different direction and how you finished with the ribbons on the zipper. Great job!!!!

I saved selvages for several years and found I really liked the way different color groups looked together. I always have several laid out and I use various stitches to quilt the back portions together.
Nice selvage tote.

Oh boy! Just cleaned my sewing room and found my box of selvedges. Now I'm going to make that tote bag, it looks so simple. Thank you!!

Salvage projects are So cute!

Oh, I like that. It's really cute. That's a great way to use up shorter lengths. I'll keep this in mind.
