My quilting best friend recently came and spent 3 days at my house & we worked on string quilts from "selvages only". We had both been saving selvages for several years and decided it was time to do something. We started by emptying one of the two tubs of selvages on the cutting table. In the pictures you can see that after making over 35 nine inch block (some cut in 1/2 for borders) it did not appear that we had made much of a dent in our stash. After she went home, she called to tell me she has added about twice as many blocks to hers so far and I am working on four borders for mine, each in a different color. As you will see in the pics, it is still in the design stage on my design wall. Searching for & seperating colors in the mountain of selvages is quite a challenge. "Seams" as though we both have many more selvage projects ahead of us. This is a blast and goes really fast.

here are 30+blocks & 1/2 blocks....so far, plus the pile of selvages still on the table

still building colored blocks for borders, as you can see on the left it has a blk/wht border, then orange, red & purple

Very interesting, you have a lot of patience  :D

That's neat looking. I'll have to look into that pattern.

sewnsewer2 03-07-2009 02:59 PM

That really looks nice. I couldn't imagine what one would looked like with just selvages.

RedGarnet222 03-07-2009 03:42 PM

I am flabbergasted! Wow that is one huge stack of selvages to sew up! Your quilt looks really neat though done in the stip piecing like that. Nice studio but the way.

Lovely! What is that teriffic looking "nine" patch (black, pinkish and white) on the left side of your design wall?
Quilting? Embroidery? stained glass? Applique? My mouth is watering....

WOW! That is quite a pile of salvages to work with, a big undertaking. I am impressed with the working area, design wall, big TV, Love your space :D

Amazing. Your both have a lot more patience than me. We have a girl in our guild that makes things from one or at the most 2 inch wide strips or blocks. I would pull my hair out. You certainly got your money's worth from those selvages.

Hi Jaynie,
I'm just wondering if you can wash this without it shrinking?
This is really pretty and my goodness how many years did it take to collect all of these, are they all yours collection or did friends save for you too?
It really is attractive~

First of all..I'm in awe of the pile of selvages that you gathered...just HOW MANY quilts have you made and how long have you been saving??? The quilt looks great...I just love those..although I have to admit that I do save the selvages and give them away..

Love your studio too...looks like a dream to me!

That's beautiful! And hey, if you have any extra selvages, PLEASE send them my way! I've been wanting to make one of these, but I just have a small ziploc baggie of them. :(

Lots of selvages. You are going to be busy. Like the quilt.

Jaynie 03-07-2009 07:26 PM

Well quilters....to answer some of your questions:
My friend and I have been saving selvages for about 8-9 years, just the two of us.
I would say, between the two of us we have probably made around 75 quilts in the past 10 yrs. I do almost all the machine quilting for both of us.
That pile of selvages on the table was only about half of what we have saved.
I am not sure about the shrinkage when its is washed, but I am hoping that it will be minimal since it is string pieced onto fabric & I will quilt it fairly close.
And for "borntoquilt"...the red/wht/blk blocks on the design wall were fussy cut hearts machinenappliqued onto fussy cut blocks. I then did a machine blanket stitch around the hearts. I intended to have it done for valentines day...but life happens and the quilt didn't. So maybe next year. I will post some closeup pics of those blocks for you.
Thanks for the comments.
Stay tuned for more pics of a couple of other WIPs

Your quilt made up of selvages is seriously one of the most beautiful quilts I've ever seen. I hate to 'waste' anything & here you've used pieces most people toss out. LOVE IT!!!
