Sewing at a retreat on Ocras Island, WA

My daughter and I went to a retreat is past weekend. She was using my old Viking until it ran so fast by itself and smelled burned. It was her first experience sewing. We had a spare machine. A Singer Inspiration that worked well, except we needed to re thread it every so often because the treads would nest underneath. I did a baby quilt and she started a batik, split rails with diamonds.

Oh wow what a view. Is that water? I hope your daughter still had fun anyway. Nice you had a backup machine. Pretty quilts.

barking-rabbit 01-18-2016 12:35 PM

Yes it is water. We are on a large island north of Seattle.

Orcas Island is such a beautiful place. Haven't been out there in over 40 years. Last time we went my DH's scuba team had a weekend of diving. Would love to go back for another weekend. Looks like you had a great time, even with the machine problems.

QuiltnNan 01-18-2016 01:42 PM

nicely done

Cam's gram 01-18-2016 03:43 PM

Nice quilts - outstanding view!

faykilgore 01-18-2016 03:49 PM

OH, I really like the split rail with diamonds. I love quilting retreats and that one looks awesome!

BonnieI 01-18-2016 03:58 PM

Looks like a great place. Your quilts are nice.

QUILTNMO 01-18-2016 03:59 PM

very nice!!!

lynnie 01-18-2016 04:39 PM

great view, great finish.

ManiacQuilter2 01-18-2016 05:05 PM

I wouldn't have gotten as much done as you did because I would want to be out in that beautiful picture perfect scenery.

That view would certainly inspire you to produce your lovely work.

Merrylin 01-18-2016 06:17 PM

Pretty quilts! I could get a lot done, too, if I had such a view out my window! :)

DKuehn 01-18-2016 09:37 PM

Love the San Juans, before we moved away we loved to boat around the islands, Jones Island and Roche Harbor were our favorite spots. The kids still go to Camp Orkila there on Orcas Island every year. Very beautiful place!

quiltingcandy 01-18-2016 09:44 PM

I am so jealous !!! When I heard about the retreat I wanted to go, we honeymooned on Orcas Island in 1973. I am sorry about the problems with the machines, but it does look like you got a lot of work done.

What a beautiful view. Maybe she wasn't real discouraged. Looks like she is doing a great job.

Very nice to share with your daughter. Tell her I really like her colors in that quilt.

I will tell her. Her colors were the hit of the retreat.

She is the type of person who needs every thing just right. I was so proud of her when her first wonky diamond came up and she said, "it's perfect".

Very nice. Great view also. My son is in the coast guard stationed in Seattle.

Kitsie 01-19-2016 09:02 AM

Yes, I loved the islands! Grandad used to take me on the little island ferry for a trip around them all! This was about 60 years ago! Hope not too much has changed!

We have friend's on Orcas, what an amazing view!!!

kaylfordsollimo 01-20-2016 03:43 AM

What a beautiful place! A back up machine was a great idea, too. I needed that once. Saved my three days of sewing or I would have just had to leave. Nice quilts, too.

copycat 01-20-2016 04:11 AM

Pretty quilts. Your daughter is a talented quilter by the looks of her quilt.

jmoore 01-20-2016 04:32 AM

I have not had the opportunity to attend a retreat but I'm sure I would like it... thank goodness there was a backup machine.

annette1952 01-20-2016 04:43 AM

What a beautiful place to be quilting. Sorry for your machine troubles but looks like you had lots of fun creating memories with your daughter. Very pretty quilt too. I love the fabrics.

grammysharon 01-20-2016 08:28 AM

What a fun and beautiful place for a quilt retreat! Beautiful quilts you have both started!

MargeD 01-20-2016 09:22 AM

Both are great quilts. What a wonderful mother-daughter experience and in such a beautiful location.

Wonderful! And you have something to show for your weekend. I stayed home and, sadly, watched the Seahawk game
:( So glad your DD shares your interest in quilting. Mine doesn't like sewing of any kind - didn't get that gene, I guess. Happy you had a good tiime!

Terricat 01-20-2016 08:20 PM

Are you at the lodge by the Over the Rainbow fabric store? I have bought from them several times online and always get excellent service and prices.

We were at the YMCA Camp Orklia. My son in law is the retreat director there. They added a weekend this year because the other weekend filled so fast.

barking-rabbit 01-20-2016 09:33 PM

Maybe next year you can join me.

I think that is on Camanos Island. There is no or rather no longer a fabric store on this island.

Terricat 01-22-2016 07:24 PM

Thanks Barking-rabbit --- I went to Google and looked up the island where you are. We have a nephew and family who live near Mt. Vernon, and my sister's family lives near Shelton, which is south of Seattle and around the bay. So I have been close to your area a few times and checked out a few quilt shops. We always have a great time when we visit.
