I am trying to get hubby to make me a thread rack for my 200+ spools of thread and I need some ideas!

This was posted this morning - scroll down to see the double door hanging cabinet - it has room for way more than 200 spools.

It was an existing piece, but it doesn't look like it would be hard to recreate (with the right tools and skills ;-) ).

Yes...SHARE! I saw a post from a gentleman that had an entire cabinet made especially for storing his threads, iron, etc. It was absolutely beautiful!

I use drawers, so I can't help you. If I had the space I'd like a cabinet, too.

I have mine hung inside the closet door. So they are protected from the light and dust.

It's hard to beat FixedGearHead's cabinet for threads. For mine, I bought an old printer's type box at a yard sale for $5.00. It was dusty and the spider's had been living in it but cleaned up great. The seller couldn't imagine why I wanted it. It's about 3'x2' and hangs on the wall to display colorful threads, thimbles & such. I think it's a great decorative piece. Sorry I can't show a pic. Had to dismantle my sewing room for a while. (Sigh)

What thread rack????? Mine is all in a large popcorn tin.

The reason I made the large case for storing thread, is because I am concerned about the sunlight causing the cotton thread, which I use, to degrade over the course of time. I would guess if you had a storage rack that was on the back of the closet door, , and the door was kept closed, for the majority of the time, it would be fine. It would be very easy to make a rack out of 2" x2"
lumber and then holes drilled and spaced appropriately, and dowels inserted to it to hold the spools. The whole thing could be made and sized to your door and look great, when all those various colors were arranged in a graduated pattern. That would be my choice, for a home made type of storage rack.
