This is a fun way to make your own fabric. Draw with sharpie markers on light colored fabric and add 90% rubbing alcohol to make the dye in the marker disfuse. Let sit overnight then heat set. Moosegirl

That's a really cool idea! Wonderful, I'm going to have to try that. Do you let it sit in the alcohol overnight or do you dip and allow to dry?

jamh 08-27-2010 05:23 AM

WOW!! that neat I have to try it!! Thanks

Chele 08-27-2010 05:23 AM

How cool!

katiebear1 08-27-2010 05:25 AM

Aren't you clever. Looks like fun. How do you apply the alchol and after it is set is it then washable?

I used a foam paint brush to control the bleed factor-try small amounts first and see the results to decide how much to put on the drawn marker line. Moosegirl

What a wonderful idea. My 15 yr old DS is an artist and I was looking for a way to incorporate his drawings into a quilt. Thank you for sharing.

LovinMySoldier 08-27-2010 07:47 AM

To heat set did you just iron over the top?

raptureready 08-27-2010 08:07 AM

I've got the markers, fabric and paint brushes now I just need to see if I've got the alcohol.

Cool idea! I will have to try this............

You might try looking at your rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) for the percentage. Some are 70% and some are 90%. You might get different amounts of bleed with the different percentages. Maybe I'll experiment a little this weekend.

LOL, art I can do! Thanks for the great idea!

Luv2sew4fun 08-27-2010 07:58 PM

Really great idea.... I have to try that!

JoanneS 08-27-2010 08:12 PM

This sort of looks like the effect you can get with the VERY expensive Tsuzenko inks.

I wonder if cheap vodka would work as well as rubbing alcohol?

lab fairy 08-27-2010 08:17 PM

I can feel another experiment coming on. If the ink doesn't bleed you can drink what's left in the bottle and it will look like it did. Just kidding. I don't have an artistic bone in my body so I don't think any amount of ink diffusion will help my best efforts. I hope to see more great stuff from the rest of you.

Ahhhh, but you'd have to beware of the quilt police!! They might get you for drinking and drawing.

LovinMySoldier 08-27-2010 09:14 PM

So thanks for the fun idea. I went and bought permanent markers (an 8 pack for 4 bucks at walmart, part of the back to school sale, if anyone else is in need) and some rubbing alcohol. I had tons of fun. First I used some muslin and man it really bled. Then I tried some other fabric and a little less rubbing alcohol :) Anyways lots of fun. I made 4 different pieces. Thanks for the entertainment :)

I ran a chemical warehouse for the University of Illinois for years and 90% alcohol would be 180 proof. I don't know how strong vodka comes but . . . . .

boxerlady 08-28-2010 05:43 AM

neat idea

I bought a pile of "stuff" at a rummage sale which included some old muslin. I've washed it in Oxy-clean and I've been moving it about wondering what to do with it. ------------next women's meeting at my church will have a sharpie/alcohol demonstration.

THANKS!

craftybear 08-28-2010 07:36 AM
