Smoky Mountain Stars recycled shirts quilt-- main part done.

This is Bonnie Hunter's SMS pattern. It's my first quilt with recycled men's shirts and I have to say I love it! So 'homey'.... Can you see the stars? I used lighter shirts for the backgrounds, instead of white, so the stars are a bit less obvious. I plan to quilt them so that they stand out more (hopefully). The quilt so far is only 54" x 60" so it will definitely be getting a narrow dark border followed by a wider border of plaid rectangles out of the same shirt fabrics. (Why not?) I want it big enough for a full sized bed, if possible.

Very nice! You have a wonderful assortment of plaids. How long did you collect shirts? I like the elongated stars. I like your plan for the border. I think it will make the stars really pop!

I've been collecting off and on for a couple of years. I hit the church rummage sales towards the end of their day, and by that time they are saying, "stuff a bag for two dollars!" or something to that effect. A few weekends ago I got really lucky and came home with about a dozen really nice, BIG men's shirts. When they have long sleeves and are XXXL, you get a ton of fabric in them. It doesn't take long Maybe 20 shirts and you are good to go! In fact you can do several shirt quilts with that many.
