I was just chatting (my first time) and mentioned I was done snowdyeing all the fabric I wanted so Spring can come anytime. Some people chatting had never seen snow dyeing so I am going to try to post some photos of quilts where I have used it.

This is handpainted pansies done on the snow dyed fabric

The lighter fabric is also the snow dyed

I went to my first quilt guild meeting the other day, and a lady who does this brought some samples of her dyed fabric and explained how to do it. Very neat!

If you are using procion dyes which are fiber reactive, you soak the fabric in soda ash. put the snow on top of your scrunched up fabric in the tub and then put the dye over the snow and let melt. Rinse and wash with synthropol.

But I couldn't get a good purple I kept getting fushia. My house is too cold where I dye. So I went to Ritt dye. After the snow melts, you have to set Ritt dye. So I nuke it. They say two minutes for each half yard of fabric

wanderingcreek 03-20-2011 05:16 PM

That is very lovely fabric. With all the snow we have here I should try this. I would have been happy getting fuschia as that is one of my favorite colors!

MDMPanther 03-20-2011 05:17 PM

Beautiful...who would have ever thought...snowdyeing!! Love how the colors came out!!

SherriB 03-20-2011 05:32 PM

I love all the beautiful fabrics you made. If we ever had enough snow, I would give it a try.

rainbowzebra 03-20-2011 05:39 PM

suebee 03-20-2011 06:07 PM

So ...what IS snow dying??

oldswimmer 03-20-2011 06:09 PM

This is on my list to try. I have a magazine with pictures and a tute on how to do it. I think the results are beautiful....and I think I better get geared up for next winter. Heck, It might even make me glad to see snow again!

Mariposa 03-20-2011 06:30 PM

Snow dyeing sounds like a neat idea! Do you use any certain kind(s) of fabric for this? Or some that work better than others-?
*Your pansy quilt is gorgeous! Fabrics, flowers, and quilting!

tutty 03-20-2011 06:31 PM

debcavan 03-20-2011 06:56 PM

About three to four inches of snow. You can google snow dyeing and find directions with photos.

pepared for dying fabric has no finishes on it so it works well. My friend says that a mercerized cotten works the best. When you put two different fabrics in to dye them together, they do come out differently.

Stitchalong 03-21-2011 05:43 AM

Beautiful!!

qltncat 03-21-2011 06:29 AM

Nice technique with beautiful results.

Could someone please send me enough snow to try it?

Linda

FancyFoot 03-21-2011 06:35 AM

Debbie B 03-22-2011 02:49 PM

It is beautiful fabric, painting and the quilting is wonderful, but what is snow dying?

LoriEl 03-22-2011 02:52 PM

I learned something new-snowdying! Hope I remember if we get snow next year.

snicker dee 03-22-2011 11:13 PM

Gorgeous!! Makes me actually wish I was back in the snow. I will just go visit my quilting relatives next year. Where did you find instructions on how to do that

Kitsapquilter 03-23-2011 02:05 AM

So people who got all that snow this winter could have had a good use for it after all! That is interesting. Learn something new on here everyday! We didn't get enough snow here this winter to do any snow-dying though. Should have heard of that process when I lived in Alaska!
