I don't know what else to do!! Are these suppose to be like this at the area of the side points on the diamonds? I thought they were suppose to line up. I have checked and re-checked the 1/4" seams and the correct cutting. I don't want to piece all eight diamonds if this is wrong. The small diamond at the top is off also. ANY advice is welcomed!!!

I don't know your pattern, so am only making an educated guess here! I agree with you, no it should not be looking like that.
My first thought would be .... go back and measure all your pieces. Are they cut correctly with precision? And measure all your seams, are they the exact 1/4"? A little out here and there for either, soon can add up to a major difference such as you have shown!! On a positive note .... you have one awesome quilt in the making, as I love the colours/fabrics you have shown us so far. I am now excitedly waiting to see where it goes from here! |
That's a beautiful block, but I agree something is wrong. Did you cut them accurately?
|
Maybe set you needle one move over to make it a scant quarter inch. See if the instructions say that anywhere. BUT make sure when you stop and then continue the next day that you remember to move your needle one slot over.
Might help....those kind of blocks drive me crazy! Good luck and great colors. |
Figure out the math for each unit size before joining. If you are not getting that size, your seam allowance needs to be adjusted. With all those tiny pieces you will need each unit to be perfect before joining. It will look awesome when you get it right.

Paper piecing is the only way I can get every thing to line up right when doing the Feathered Star.

Thank you, I will post pics as i go along. I have checked the seams and the cutting.

Not worth the hassle otherwise. |
A lot of patterns are "assuming" you will sew a scant 1/4" seam. So if you don't, you will end up off about the same amount as what is shown in your picture.
Maybe cut some scraps, and try again? See if slightly changing the seam allowance helps? :D:D:D |

Ahhhh problem solved, And I feel a little embarrassed. I have tried this diamond thing once before anly to toss it aside from frustration. I forgot to extend the diamond tip beyond the end for 1/4' seam allowance, or something like that. The directions didn't say to do that so I forgot. Thanks all...now let's see if I can get the other 7 that close.
I got one right. |
Glad you figured out the problem. It's going to look great - be sure and show us again when you finish it!

The brown diamond looks fantastic. Perfect placement.
That is going to be a stunning star when it's all put together. |
Glad you got it figured out! It's gonna be a gorgeous quilt! Love your fabric!
|
I hate that! I'm always messing it up.

Glad you got it! Beautiful fabric!!!

Here's a way to train yourself: take a straight pin, put it into the diamond at the exact spot where two seam lines will cross. (the point of your diamond) Do this with both pieces that you will sew together. The pindots should indicate an exact crossing point. If you prefer, draw thin pencil lines on the back sides of your two pieces--exactly on the seam line.

Yup! That is what I was about to say. I am glad you figured it out, many people never do. In joining segments, put a vertical pin through where they should all meet, then pin on either side of that.
Also, When I started quilting, the "scant" 1/4" drove me crazy. No one told me that the measure included the hairy edges of the allowance, which makes about 1/32" difference. |

Wonder if your ruler could be the culprit? Are the lines thick....could affect actual cuts.
|
It is so fantastic when you figure out a problem. Look forward to seeing it when it is done! I really like the colors.

I am gaga over your fabric choices. It's going to be an epic piece of work :)
|
Well I don't know about epic but I sure do love these fabrics. I just hope I don't royaly mess it up. Now I'm trying to figure out set in seams. WHAT was I thinking when I tackled this monster.

Update on my Feathered Star...
I've got them all sewn together with 4 of the set in sections (ugh there aggravating also) sewn in. I lost one of the points in the center. I've tried to fix it once already. It's just too noticable to leave it like that. Also have couple other spots that are off a bit. I WILL NOT LET THIS BEAT ME. Updates to follow........ |
that's going to be so gorgeous.
|
Beautiful. I didn't even notice until you pointed it out!!!
|
What a fantastic job! You have a lot more patience than me :)
Can't wait to see it finished. |
That is going to be beautiful
|
Your fabrics are wonderful together!

The others just blend in. The fabric combo you've chosen is really striking. Leave it for a day and then come back and give the center another try. One trick I've used when sewing the sections together is to NOT sew all the way to the center. I stop at the 1/4" mark - just like you would on a y-seam. That way you don't have all that fabric bunching up and causing an issue by all coming together. You might have a teeny tiny hole in the center, but 2 hand stitches and it's closed. That said, I've also been known on occasion - cough, cough - to use a very fine point Sharpie/Pigma pen to mask a similar situation by making it less noticeable. |
