In another thread I read a post about the split 9-patch. I've been making them for the last 3 days (along with other projects). Anyway, I found a couple of web sites that may be of interest. One would be great for using up scraps and the other uses very little yardage and can be done in less than two hours.
http://quiltsatcs.blogspot.com/2007/04/disappearing-9-patch-tutorial.html http://www.myquiltblog.com/nancyrose/4624/ This one took only 1 1/2 hours and will be donated to charity (if they'll have it). I made it for a quilting test/practice thing. This one is doubled and no borders yet. It's for my son who is Fire/EMT I still need to add borders and it doesn't have a home yet. |
The teletubbies remind me of the year I made tubby costumes for Halloween for my 17 year old daughter and her best friend. They were cute, and I used the leftovers to make lap robes for a local nursing home. Thanks for the memory jog. :-)

Oh nice!!! I like all of them :) Oh dear...another for my "to do" list.. :) :)
|
Thanks Ladies for your comments. Since I made the original post, I have finished yet another pieced top. I can't believe how fast this thing comes together! When I cut, I stack 'n whack, I strip-piece as much as possible, and chain-piece this entire project.
I think this design is perfect for newbies as well as seasoned quilters and wanted to share. I can't post a pic of #4 because hubby has gone to bed. I take pics with my digital camera and he puts 'em on his computer and emails them to me. CraZy, huh? Maybe tomorrow sometime. Again, thanks for the responses. :) |
Thanks! I'll have to rustle up some material and try it!
|
Those are all very nice! I'll have to add this to my list, too!
|
looks like this would fun to try! Thanks for sharing!!!
|
Thanks again for the responses. I hope as others try this method, they will share pics.
Here's a lot of little samples of the scrappy look. Happy Quilting! :-) |
Great JOb!
|
I like this idea. I may try a block/s this weekend.
|
Again, thanks everyone. Don't be shy about trying this pattern. It's the fastest and easiest one I've ever done. I just finished 2 more and am getting ready to start another.
In my last post, I meant to post a link to show some scrappy little incubator quilts of this design. I failed to post the link. Sorry, Hubby says I am "binge Sewing" right now and can't focus on much else. 'Duh Anyway, here's the link! http://quiltsatcs.blogspot.com/2007/04/virtual-retreat-progress.html |
I just love the one for your son! I just got some great fabric to use for Split 9-Patch. Now I just have to find the time to actually sew them. Project #137

Hey thanks sooo much!!! I've had a couple of gals suggest these blocks for their ease. Now I can see, they look much more involved than they actually are!!! I just looked at pictures of finished projects until now. Thanks for the great tutorial...I knew my friends were right, they would never guide me in the wrong direction...but I doubted my ability to do such a "difficult looking" block. Boy do I feel silly now!! Your quilts are sooo adorable by the way, and the girls love the tele tubby quilt. They would like to know why you named it tubby ugly  Thanks again for the great links...
and my apologies to my friends that told me how easy these were!! You were very very right girls!! |
Thanks so much for the comments. I'm glad some of you liked the tutorial. I thought it was excellent and easy to follow.
:) I made the tele tubby quilt because I wanted to try a new quilting design, that I think turned out ugly. Hence the name. Also, I used that fabric because my granddaughter has long outgrown the tubbies so it wouldn't matter so much if I messed it up. I have another one in the frame now that is also a practice quilt. Again, this block pattern goes together so fast it's worth trying. I'm playing with a scrappy version now (also much smaller scale blocks). Happy quilting! |
I don't think the teletubby quilt is ugly. I think it is cute! If you didn't want to keep it, it would make a great baby gift.
|
I think I prefer the smaller blocks. The finished quilt looks a bit more difficult than with the bigger blocks. Of course it could just be that I tend to lean toward smaller blocks anyway. I have laid out my focus fabric for this and just need to pick out the matching fabrics to go with it. Now if the snow would just continue to fall (3 feet plus another 4 inches overnight and more expected), everything will be canceled for today and tomorrow and I can go play in my quilt room! :D

In the name of quilting, Let it snow!
I've pieced about 8 of these (in various sizes) in the last 2 weeks, and am just now trying a smaller scale in the scrappy version. It's not as fast but just darling. Tiff, some of these were done with fabrics that coordinate with the focus fabric, and other with "contrast" fabrics. I think it's just a matter of choice. For me, I want to put a dent in my stash. On the other hand, my UFO's are searching for a new and less crowded galaxy! :!: Here's one more pic ... This is for my granddaughter that is due in May. The fabric is from the "Precious Moments" collection. It is flame retardant but like sewing with slick marshmellows! |

However, I am all for the quilting part!!!! Huzzah! And I love the above quilt. I really do like it in the smaller scale. What size strip did you start with on the above quilt for your granddaughter? ~Tiffany |
Sorry about your dog ... I just hoped the snow would allow more sewing time. My hot tub is covered with snow too, but that may not stop me.
Actually, that quilt was done with the 6" strips. I'm playing with 2 different one's now. One is a Hanna Montana quilt for my 9 yo granddaughter using the same scale. The other is a scrappy version of a much smaller scale. I had a ton of 3" strips left over from 3 or 4 other quilts done this year, so I used them to start the "scrappy" top. I made 30 - 9-patch blocks last night (just a drop in the bucket) andcompleted 4 of the "super-blocks" (which is 4 of them slashed, swapped, and sewn). No pics yet, but soon ... soon :!: |
 Let me just pick my jaw up off the floor.
I sure wish I lived near you. It sounds like you are efficient and organized and get a lot done! ~Tiffany |
Tiff, wish you lived near here also. My best quilting buddy is that 9 yo granddaughter (who lives 200 miles from me) and my 2 fur~friends (Nummy and Zippy). I don't belong to a guild so I sew solo!
It's fun sharing ideas, goofs, and pics online. My goofs go to charity. Either Project Linus or a local shelter for battered women and children. |
in2stitching ..that quilt is so sweet! I can imagine that there are quite a few who are hoping you make a goofer soon :-)
I wished we just had snow falling..There are tornado warnings out for here all day :!: I'm not surprized, it was 80 F yesterday and 70 now. |

I finished "Tubby_Ugly" :!:
I prepared the quilt for binding and left it out with 3 others along with a piece of raw apple cake and pitcher of tea and still the "Binding Fairies" passed over my house. The next night I left the quilts out with a fancy bowl of cashews and pitcher of margaritas! Still the "Binding Fairies" went elsewhere  So, I stole the treats and did the dang binding myself :!: Yet another split-9. Now to give it a home. |
Those darn binding fairies!!!! They by-passed my house too..I left out chocolate covered strawberries and red wine! well...(burp...'cuse me)...I had to take care of the goodies AND the strawberries
Your tele ugly is sure cute. I'm going to dig in my stash and cut out pieces for one of these quilts tonight. |
Sandpat, I couldn't help but giggle at your response. Maybe we all have that one phase of quilting that we don't love as much as others. For me, it has always been the binding.
I finished 3 other quilts with binding and I just wanted this one done. Now I have a stack (4 or 5) that need borders and quilting and all I want to do is piece another! Maybe the border fairies can be tempted tonight ... if I could just think of what they might like. (the darn borders are already cut and prepped!) |
