split rail with pinwheel accent and question about borders

I have this top together and need to decide on the borders. I'm making it a queen size. Do you think the flower fabric accent for one of the borders is too weird? I was planning on a thin border next to the blocks, then two other borders, 4 or 5 inches each.

I lik the look of the borders in the last picture

I like the two outside borders, but I'd like the narrow one a more defined color - like the dark blue in pinwheels. It needs to contain the colors in the quilt so they don't bleed. That smoky blue blends a little too well, IMO. I love the happy flower border and the blue outer is good, too.

I like your border choices. The quilt is lovely!

Beautiful quilt. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Thanks everyone. Irishrose, I was thinking about a dark navy blue for the narrow border, or a deeper brown than the other browns in the quilt, but thought I'd see if I could get away with the fabric I already had :) The blue in the pinwheels is a little too light of a royal blue and doesn't set off some of the other blues in the split rail enough. Guess there's more fabric shopping in my future!

I love your quilt but I'm no help with the borders.

Good job, it looks terrific and I love your color choices. I like the borders too. Thanks for sharing.

The floral border is wonderful with the quilt.
My mantra.....If YOU aren't doing the work, the fabric has to. It means, when the piecing is simple (what is more simple than a rail fence?!) then the fabric can be busy to add texture, movement, and interest to the quilt. (Thank you, Mary Ellen Hopkins for that bit of wisdom:))

I like the way you have it set up. The blue borders look fine and the floral add a nice touch.

I think the floral border is a nice counterpoint to the angles of the center. A dark narrow inner border would make a good accent to the floral and add a distinctive touch to the quilt. Nicely done!

I like the pinwheel accent.

I had the best time with this pattern. I chose a border of a color within and a thin binding..stitch in the ditch quilting..minus the pinwheels. Left them alone. Nice job!

I love your top. I was so impressed on the close up how beautifully it is matched.

I am not wild about the print since there are no large prints anywhere in the quilt top but then I am not seeing it in person. It really doesn't matter what I think, it matters what you think. If you are questioning it, you must not be happy with it. Audition a stripe just for fun or make the large print into a smaller border and audition that. Have fun, play

Your quilt is beautiful, love your fabrics!

IndigoQuilter 08-29-2012 02:56 PM

I think you made great border choices. I think your quilt is stunning.

sewbeadit 08-29-2012 03:07 PM

I think the flower fabric would be wonderful as you have a lot of solid type fabrics in the body of your quilt. I love that patttern you have made and the colors.

Marcia_PA 08-30-2012 05:16 AM

Thank you for all of your suggestions and compliments. I'm still undecided about the borders, so I'll probably make a trip to the quilt shop today to see if anything there strikes me. I'm sure I'll come out with fabric, whether it will be for this quilt is something else altogether. :)

I agree! Those borders are perfect, in my eyes! And I love your quilt, too!

barny 08-30-2012 01:39 PM

What if you picked up some of the beige for part of the border? Or the red? Maybe the beige with texture in it. The pin-wheels say texture to me. Try something!

That is so pretty! I love it!

PaperPrincess 08-30-2012 05:07 PM

Love your quilt, but one caution. I have that same blue vine-y print. I washed it 4 times and it was still bleeding LOTS. I finally had to treat it with Retayne. If you haven't cut into it, make sure you pre wash it, If you've already used it, make sure you launder the quilt with lots of color catchers or Synthrapol.

I haven't washed that fabric yet, but plan to. Thank you for the warning.

I'm thinking of using the gold fabric that's in every block for the first border, making it the same width as the strips in the blocks, then a wider border of the blue flowered fabric and binding it with the dark blue vine fabric. Nothing's set in stone yet!

brewsa 08-30-2012 05:26 PM

I like these borders.

patsynel 08-30-2012 05:33 PM

Very pretty quilt and I like your choice for the borders..

Dina 08-30-2012 05:33 PM

I love your quilt! Someone said nothing was simpler than a Rail Fence, but your Rail Fence has all these fancy parts....nothing simple about it!! Just beautiful. Sorry, I am not good at helping with borders. I am sure you will figure out what is just perfect for you.
