I've always had good luck with a paste of oxyclean left on to soak a little while. Sometimes a repeat application is to be needed.

Whink is still available and it does work on rust. May needto goto a hardware store but I believe WalMart has it.

Oxalic acid crystals mixed into a little water and sponged on the rust stain will take it out. Then rinse well. You can buy the crystals at any drug store, but may have to ask the druggist, some stores keep it behind the counter.

an oxi clean solution in a spray bottle will do the trick.

Second the Whink....good stuff!!!

I just saw a video that showed water, a qt of buttermilk and juice of 1 lemon, mix in a big bowl and let soak to get rid of stains on old quilts.
|
I have used lemon juice and sun. Also the new Tide has a spot remover in it and I was not aware but when my laundry was done I noticed a spot on an old T shirt was gone. It had been washed & dryed in the dryer several times.

Like the applique idea if all else fails. Adorable quilt!

Whink is still available I get it at wal-mart and krogers.I would try a small amt. on a q-tip and rub, don't soak it.

I used the vintage on 2 quilts soaking them in the tub, one was my grandmothers, that my great grandmother made and the other I did about 10 years ago, but it had quite a few brownish spots all over, they all came out.
