St. Nicholas Day gift
In Poland we have a nice custom for the St. Nicholas Day (or Santa Claus Day), which is 6th December. This is the day to present small, no-fuss gifts - the big ones are for Christmas. They are supposed to be surprise - traditionally those gifts are put in your shoes while you sleep like all good children should :)
This year it was last Friday. I was stuck at home with a cold when I realized that I had nothing for my fiancee. No way to run for quick shopping :/ So I quickly made a lunch mat with the last bits of the hedgehog fabric I used for his quilt some time ago (remember this Hedgehog Quilt?). He found it like this when he got home from work (so Santa was a bit late in this case): https://www.quiltingboard.com/member...804-620698.jpg And this is the lunch mat, front and back: https://www.quiltingboard.com/member...804-620696.jpg https://www.quiltingboard.com/member...804-620697.jpg |

Love the tradition. It sounds like fun. You did a bang up job at the last minute. I could never do that with a fuzzy head. I remember the quilt. Good job on both. Thanks for posting.

Thank you for sharing your tradition... makes me smile.

What a great idea and very inventive since you couldn't get out. Bet he liked it! Hope you are feeling better now.

Fun idea, and I cannot believe I’ve never heard of St Nicholas Day since my husband is Polish. He has never heard of it either. I may do this next year if I remember— introduce it to my grandtwins who will be 2 then.
|
I like the idea and I want to do this also.
|
What a sweet gift!

Thank you all for your kind words. Zozee - ask about Mikołajki (pronounced Meeko - why - kee).

What an awesome tradition and you made such a nice little gift that will mean a lot to him. When in a pinch you certainly came thru with a great gift. Hope you feel better soon

Quick thinking! Nice job and it looks great! I too am polish. When my Kids were very young they had an avent bag and received little items everyday of advent but on St. Nicholas day the present was left in their shoe and they found it quickly. My girls also did polish dance for 5 years and got pretty good at that. They were able to learn many traditions along the way. I don't think they do many if any of the things we did with them. I still do St, Nicholas day with DH. he got socks this year. hehehe. One thing they do however is home make porigi.

Cute quilt mat.

Wonderful tradition and such a nice little gift!

Quick thinking on your part...you did well!
St Nicholas was a part of my Dutch SIL's upbringing, too, but don't think they have carried on the tradition here in the US with their children. If I recall, the family wrote poems and read them aloud on St Nicholas's day. |
Very interesting! Love the idea you came up with!
|
Adorable! Thanks for the great story that goes with the photos.:D
|
