That's fabric??? I thought it was glass when I first looked at it. Very pretty.

sewmuchmore 01-20-2011 06:54 AM

Awesome block. Would love to see the finish quilt.

moonwork42029 01-20-2011 06:57 AM

UNBELIEVABLE! Looks like glass to me too

coastienest 01-20-2011 07:09 AM

Wow, I love it. It is unbelievable how much it looks like stained glass. Your idea of adding it into the Storm at Sea is wonderful. Be sure to post a picture of the finished product

Quiltforme 01-20-2011 07:11 AM

WOW!! I cannot wait to see it in the quilt it will be amazing!

arbed31 01-20-2011 07:13 AM

That is very beautiful. I have attempted stained glass quilting but need lots of practice. Any tips?

Grama Lehr 01-20-2011 07:50 AM

My husband has a "thing" for sail boats, so I am always attracted to them. You did an awesome job on it!!

stpatmom 01-20-2011 07:51 AM

Fantastic!

tealfalcon 01-20-2011 07:58 AM

That's awesome and can't wait to see it finished

ckcowl 01-20-2011 07:59 AM

did you have any specific problems? i find stained glass to be one of the most forgiving techniques...so easy to cover oopsies. i guess the only tip i can offer is...cut your applique pieces generously, so you have a little overlap (the bias tape will cover the areas when you apply your (leading). like with all applique start from the lower layer and work your way up, fuse all pieces in place then add your leading and zig-zag the leading in place, which holds all of your applique pieces securily

That's beautiful! The movement in it is so realistic, I could almost feel like I'm at sea. The idea to include in a Storm at Sea is fantastic, look forward to seeing that!

thought i would show a bit of the storm at sea design...only the blue part is part of the quilt design, the tan's in the upper corner are not part of the design...the square in the blue colored area is where the sailboat is 'supposed' to go....only time shall tell how it looks in the end

kreinhart742 01-20-2011 08:32 AM

Wow that is wonderful

k3n 01-20-2011 08:46 AM

Beautiful! Will you paper piece it?

ckcowl 01-20-2011 08:55 AM

no i am not paper piecing the storm at sea blocks, i am using the "fast2cut quilters' trimplates / rulers-templates and piecing each block...some by hand at work others by machine at home. got the idea from the book-"a new light on Storm at Sea Quilts by Wendy Mathson" the book comes with blank design sheets you can print off to color and play with design.

Thanks for the book info. I have aUFO storm at sea in bright batiks that I got fed up with. I like PP but got tired of doing the same block over and over. I'll check this method out. :-D

Wow....I love it!! Great job. I used to do actual stained glass projects with glass many years ago but still love the looks of it. I will have to try my hand at the fabric type.

Jim's Gem 01-20-2011 10:03 AM

Gorgeous!!!

ckcowl 01-20-2011 10:08 AM

storm at sea's are really beginner friendly...very easy components, they just look complicated when they are all together. anyone at any skill level could complete one. the piecing is very basic, no inset seams, 3 blocks make up one storm block, a 3" block a 3" x 6" block and a 6" block...thats it.
the book is a good one, and the template/ruler set is great! i am so glad i went ahead and purchased them. the book does have templates in it though if you don't want to buy the ruler set

Stogsdill 01-21-2011 11:00 AM

Thankyou for mentioning that. I am a begginer and thought my Dad would love something like that Block, however not sure If I could tackle that. He and his wife have decorated their house in a sea\ocean colors. Then again after attempting just a simple patch and not liking the out come of that let my son choice a block (gentleman's fancy). Beautiful work by the way.

Maggie_Sue 01-21-2011 11:06 AM

BizzieLizzie 01-21-2011 05:55 PM

ckcowl 01-24-2011 02:30 AM

the pattern for the sailboat came from 'Ravenwood Designs' they are in Alberta Canada, and offer LOTS of beautiful stained glass patterns.
