Mplsgirl 05-03-2009 07:07 AM

They are both beautiful but the top one is stunning! Her choice of fabric makes it look like real stained glass.

Those are beautiful!

Pats8e8 05-03-2009 07:35 AM

Those are very pretty. Thanks for sharing. How long did they take to make? What size are they?

sewsue 05-03-2009 10:10 AM

Pat8e8, we are working on them at our weekly meetings and the size of the top one is 50x50cm and the other is the size of a A3 page. There are wonderful patterns in the real stained glass books and are easy adaptable to fabric.

Beautiful, especially for a first time! I may never get to try this now that my fingers won't let me hand applique, so I will just enjoy looking.

You can make these with fusible web and black bias strips too, and sew the bias strips by machine...no hand work needed

I agree, I think it might be bc her black fabric is so thin. very pretty! :D

Thanks so much for all the compliments and also it is not that difficult to do. just lots of patience is needed with all the black. We did not use bought bias binding as we decided to make it ourselves. Cut the strips and then folded into 3 and then tacked them. pinned and then sewed. Some were cut 3cm or 4cm and maybe we will have to do 2cm for the tiny buds. We are going to try satin ribbon and see how it goes. Also we are a group that do not use our sewing machines at meetings so all is getting done by hand.

These are stunning, something I want to try as well.

Which method do you use. With the bias tape or the black background and then the applique pieces are placed on top with spaces.

I have someone very keen that I make one for the house, and he has never really shown any real interest for something for the house before, but he loved those.

Lets see if I could explain :
I have a piece for the background then did the squares in bias binding and then placed the applique flowers on top no stitching is done and then placed the bias binding on top and am now stitching the bias on. So all the stitching is done on the bias binding and not with any of the other fabrics.
Hope this helps. please ask if you need more instructions and also have some lovely patterns around.
