These are pocket hand warmers. You put them in the microwave for 20 seconds, then put them in your pockets to keep your hands warm.

I got the pattern here: http://www.thesewingrepublic.com/pro...etHandWarmers/

You can make a pair of these in less than an hour. The pattern as written is big enough for a child or a woman's hands, but for larger hands, I made them a little bigger. The main squares are 6 1/2-inches square, and the pocket rectangle is 6 1/2 x 10 inches. Then I added 3/4 cup of rice instead of 1/2 cup.

I'm making three more pairs. One for each of my boys, one for my husband, one for my DIL, one for my walking buddy, and one for me!

I have a bunch of relatives in the Pacific Northwest, these would be great stocking stuffers. Thanks!

we make" bags" [all sizes] over here and fill with wheat ,microwave and use as -----bed warmers/hand warmers/soothe pains/warm pets etc depending of course how big the cover is; they are very comforting and last quite a time and do not feel awful when they get cold.

What a great idea thanks..!

That is a great idea. Wonder how long the warmth lasts. My hands get really cold when I walk my dogs in the winter.
Thanks for the information.

Thanks for the information.

They'll stay warm longer because they're in your pockets. The larger ones will stay warm longer, obviously. More rice equals more mass.

what if they get wet? Will the rice go bad? I love the idea but need to know in case of snow and rain.

I have no idea. If they get dried out, I wouldn't think so. You could always stuff them with something else. Beans, lentils, I think craft shops might have non-food items that would work.

I made these years ago and had the same concerns for the rice/beans.. I experimented a bit and unless the rice/beans get soaked and stay in the water for some time, they will be alright.. a little rain wont ruin the beans. If they are in ur pockets and ur hands covering them..( as they are meant to be.... they should be safe enough.... I love these... might be time to make another !

Thanks! What a great idea. I've made the neck warmers ( the hot/cold packs ) for years now. This is a natural extension of those and I never thought of it. What great little presents for friends. Thanks!

Neat Idea !!! THANKS !!

SherriB 10-25-2010 07:16 PM

That is a neat idea. I think I will make some for gift and for me to use also. I have Raynauds in my hands and cold weather is hard on them. They will be perfect to pop in the microwave at work and keep in my gloves while I am waiting for my car to heat up.

annette1952 10-25-2010 07:16 PM

Thank you!

My husband has the same problem and loves these. I've made some with flannel that seem to last him quite awhile.
