When my now 29 year old was 6 weeks old I had to go back to work so the lady that kept her said she would help me out for a few weeks until I found someone full time. She and her husband never had any children so it comes as no surprise that 18 years later - Nana and Burley were in the graduation stands the day she left high school with honors. So some time durring those 18 years Nana hand embroidered 50 blocks of the states, state birds and state flowers. All done on snow white cotton. Later on Nana gave my daughter the blocks and you all know how kids are. It is a wonder that I was able to find them after she moved into her new place. But I did and I had to add a few blocks to square off the quilt but put the blocks together. The sashing is navy cotton with sparkle stars and so is the backing. Nana is now 78 years old and once I got it done I gave it back to my daughter ( I knew she would appreciate it now ). She then took it to Nana so she could finally see all of her hard and loving work finished. She and Lisa were so happy.

Beautiful Quilt.

Oh, that is so pretty. A treasure, too.
Made me think of one that I started years ago for my Mom, but never was able to finish it and my fingers would get so stiff as I embroidered. Maybe tried too many at once. Mine is just a state bird quilt on muslin squares. I need to get it out and see what I can do. |
Now THAT IS an Heirloom!! Treasure it always!!

Beautiful!
I have a package of those embroidery designs in the stash I got when my Aunt Hilda died. I believe that they were Aunt Mary's -- she was the one that embroidered. |
That's what quilting is all about! Connecting the past and the future together! Love the quilt and thanks for sharing its story. :)
