Steering Wheel Cover

1 Attachment(s)
I made this for my DH's birthday. It is made from 10 charms, a layer of insulbrite, a 46" long piece from my scrap bin and two pieces of 1/4" elastic. It took me about 1-1/2 hours to make, and will keep his hands from burning in the Texas heat.

That is neat. I thought about making one out of Betty Boop fabric along with a dash board cover. Thanks for sharing.

debcavan 09-02-2014 08:47 AM

lynnie 09-02-2014 01:24 PM

I love this idea. You need to do a tute on this one. Great christmas gift idea too.

gale 09-02-2014 01:59 PM

Love it! I wish we had one of these when we were out west on vacation. That steering wheel got HOT!

Treasureit 09-02-2014 02:05 PM

gabeway 09-03-2014 04:41 AM

Well done..

ykreeves 09-03-2014 05:22 AM

Superb! Did you use a pattern or just made it up yourself? I would love to have the instructions for this...makes great gift for women & men.

willferg 09-03-2014 06:06 AM

I'd love to have instructions, too – great job on that!

tessagin 09-03-2014 06:12 AM

Very neat idea. And steering wheels will be hot to the touch through maybe as late as October. First Christmas I had down here in Corpus Christi, Texas was 98 degrees for the high. That was in '94'.

Thank you all for the comments. This is a Moda Bake Shop pattern -- http://www.modabakeshop.com/2012/11/...ing-wheel.html

It says 30 minutes, which it would probably take if you were making just one, but I was making 4. One recommendation I have is that you cut the elastic shorter than what she recommends. For a 14" steering wheel, she said 32". On this one, I used 30" and if I ever make another, I will probably reduce it another inch or so. If you look at the picture, you'll see that the outside edges don't curl to the inside as tightly as I wanted them to. I really liked the pattern because she also gave instructions on how to measure for different sized steering wheels.

People in the southern states will appreciate this during the summer. People in the northern states will probably appreciate it more in the winter.

Thank you for sharing. I am making one today!!!

luvstoquilt301 09-03-2014 07:15 AM

I had wrapped fabric around the wheel--but is still gets HOT. Going to make this one and it looks very easy.

wolph33 09-03-2014 08:51 AM

what a great idea for dealing with the heat

busy fingers 09-03-2014 01:05 PM

How clever and practical. Well done to you.

Nammie to 7 09-03-2014 07:56 PM

I've bookmarked that pattern -- thanks for sharing! This will be a fun gift to make and so cool to customize for each individual!!

It would also be good in cold weather to keep your hands from getting cold.

I am in this Texas heat and just last week burned my hand on the steering wheel. May have to make me one. It is so cute

ppquilter 09-04-2014 06:00 AM

Great idea, I see this in my teams colors! Thanks!

grabba 09-04-2014 07:37 AM

I like your colours very much. Each time my daughter comes to visit she heads for my sewing room and makes up a couple of new stearing wheel covers. Her favorite colours are black with anything else.As she drives a standard she has even figured out how to make a cover for her gear shift..lol

Taughtby Grandma 09-04-2014 12:17 PM

Great idea!! And it's washable!!

aeble 09-04-2014 12:19 PM

It's lovely. What a great line of fabrics!

I have to admit, I had a little chuckle when I saw that you made it because of the heat. We usually only put them on our car in the winter, so the steering wheel isn't so cold when you get in on a chilly morning.

Clever idea!! I bet hubby is very happy!

MargeD 09-04-2014 02:08 PM

What a fabulous idea. I could use one for myself as my DH and I do not go out often, but since I have to drive, it would be nice to have a cooler steering wheel, as the car sits in the sun, although not as hot as in TX, it still gets hot here in New England too.

caspharm 09-04-2014 02:20 PM

Great idea! Thanks for sharing! I like it better than a pattern I bought.

gale 09-04-2014 03:01 PM

I don't think shorter elastic will make it curl up. The shorter it is, the less likely it will curl since the curled position would actually have a bigger diameter than what it is now.

matraina 09-04-2014 04:28 PM

What a neat idea! Love it.

solstice3 09-04-2014 04:44 PM

Great idea!

jetayre 09-04-2014 06:00 PM

want to thank you for this idea and directions. It will solve about five hard-to-get Xmas presents for me his year and maybe more.
