Still working on siilk quilt ....

It's been a busy week. I have 12 blocks finished and have spent the good part of the weekend cutting the remainder of the shirts. Now it's no return! Everything is cut and now I can concentrate on sewing. I'm going to try to get 35 blocks completed for the quilt ... as long as the fabric takes me there!! Asked him how big he wanted the quilt and the answer was 5 x 7 blocks. Wish me luck ... Here are more blocks I've completed.
Enjoy!

looking good......

nickylsf 09-09-2012 01:37 PM

Very pretty! I made a Hawaiian shirts quilt a few years ago, using another technique and cotton shirts, and it was lots of fun! I made matching pillow shams too.

Love the blocks, the quilt is going to be a knockout!
Sorry if you answered this in one of the other threads, but did you stablize the silk before you cut it? I can see that you have stay stitched your blocks too. I have a bunch of silk shirts I want to make into a quilt but am too intimidated to start cutting.

quiltstringz 09-10-2012 08:32 AM

No ... I like the way they look right next to each other.

I didn't stabilize the silk before cutting. I found the straight grain an cut on that. I'm sewing the strips onto a foundation piece cut 13" square. I stay stitched around the edges just to help keep the small pieces from flipping up. Wanted to keep them down! It will help to keep the fabrics flat when I sew the blocks together. I'm not going to sash around the blocks. I want this to really look like a crazy quilt. I rather like how the blocks look all placed next to each other. I now have 16 blocks done!! I too was intimidated by the thought of cutting the shirts. But I figured ... what the hey ... and went at it! I hope you do make a quilt out of your silk shirts. It's really a lot of fun to see how each block takes on its own character.

piepatch 09-10-2012 07:08 PM

lynnie 09-10-2012 07:08 PM

Enjoy!

Your blocks are incredible! What a task you have ahead of you, but you and he will both like the end result I am sure.

I would like to caution you about one thing. Silk ravels terribly! I would use the smallest stitches possible or maybe even use a tiny bit of FrayCheck on the very edges of the seams. I had a quilt made of beautiful Indian sarees and sari borders and it came apart at the seams before it was ever washed.

Thanks for the tip on the fray check and stitch length.
