Storing Fat Quarters

2 Attachment(s)
I was asked how I store FQs and this is my solution

I purchased "ribbon boxes" from Michaels. I think they were in the scrapbooking area for storing decorative ribbons on a roll. They come with a divider, which I toss. I fold all my FQs into approx. a 18" square, then in quarters both ways. These boxes are 14 1/2" long, 4 1/2" wide and 5" tall. The FQs fit perfectly and I can get 40-45/box. As you can tell, I organize by color LOL

I looked for an identifying mark on the boxes, and on the lid there is a logo with IRIS inside a heart.

I use slim shoe boxes.

ManiacQuilter2 10-15-2015 06:22 AM

What a genius you are. Great idea!

I ran right out to Michaels. Looks like all stores do not carry this item, and it's not on their website. They didn't have any and the sales staff didn't think they ever did. I did find it on the Iris site, so now I'll hunt around and look for the best shipping price. Looks like it is ideal for FQs. Thanks for posting the picture!!!!!!

Try discount dollar store bread keepers.

I use the smaller shoe box size plastic totes as I can usually get 2 rows of fat quarters in them. I label each tote with the colors inside and have them conveniently under my cutting table. When I made my latest cutting table to fit my new cutting mat (4' x 8') I added a shelf underneath that will hold 2 shoebox totes x 5 across so 10 totes. Then I can add another 3 totes on top of each other x 5 across under that shelf for scraps cut in various sizes and orphan blocks.

You are organized.

Looks like a perfect size!

Thanks for the tip!

I was at Menard's last night and saw their offerings of plastic storage boxes. They have many different sizes, and looks like this one might have been there. I didn't measure anything. Just looking.

The way I store fat quarters, too, except in shoe boxes, and without the lid, since they are in a bookcase with doors....without using a lid, I can put strays on top of those in the box.

Thanks for sharing ... great idea for the fat quarters.

I think JoAnn's also has these or ones that are similar. I know they have the ArtBin ones. They usually have a storage sale at 40-60% fairly frequently.

I have been storing mine like this for a few years now but WalMart had some with hinged lids on clearance and they were wide enough for 3 rows of FQ. I love it this way.

QUILTNMO 10-16-2015 03:23 PM

that is how i store mine just a little wider plastic container like the ones you see at shows

fat quarter display

I bought racks at a yard sale that are for DVD and the fat quarters look awesome on them. My DH buys fat quarters any time he can and loves to display them!

Great Idea!

hudgoddess 10-17-2015 07:31 AM

I bet your boxes of fq's look very pretty on a shelf somewhere!

matraina 10-17-2015 08:24 AM

Perhaps they are called something other than "ribbon boxes"?

trolleystation 10-17-2015 02:05 PM

I use the under-the-bed tubs for fat quarter storage. There are a bit heavy, but, they sure hold a lot.

Tweety2911 10-17-2015 04:24 PM

Very efficient way to store FQ's. Thanks for the tip:thumbup:

craftymatt2 10-18-2015 06:53 AM

thank you for they great tips

joyful1 10-18-2015 04:40 PM

Looks like I will be on the lookout for some clear boxes. Thanks for sharing.

EmiliasNana 10-18-2015 07:40 PM

I think this is the same box as the inside dimensions are the same. http://www.shopirisusa.com/ribbon-keeper-rb-1
They are a bit pricey but work well for me.

kaylfordsollimo 10-19-2015 02:16 AM

This is even just plain pretty to look at - besides being so organized.

I usually find this brand at Joanns

That is such a great idea. Thanks so much for posting this. My fat quarters are in baskets all jumbled up. This will be a great solution.

Daylesewblessed 10-29-2015 03:25 PM

This is such a timely thread! My friend invited me over to her house last week to select FQ's. She had recently got a donation and had already whittled down the collection. I came home with lots and lots of them, and now I need to store them.

Becky's Crafts 10-29-2015 05:03 PM

I use the project bags from Nancy's Notions. I can put a lot of FQ's in them in three rows wide. The front is see-through so you can see what's in the bag at a glance. I've filled four of them and I love them!! Always looking for something to add a special touch to my projects. :-)
