Strangely long quilt

2 Attachment(s)
The size of the graphics on these tees required a long block - 14 x 18 is what I used. So to use the 20 shirts the mom wanted I ended up with a 72 x 98" quilt. That's with bigger borders on the sides than the top/bottom. My, oh my! Now I know if I need that size block to limit the quilt to 16 blocks and let them know it will be square. I've used this template for 12 tees and it worked just fine. Is this stupidly long? Just back it and call it good?

Looks great! The extra length can tuck in a pillow! Well Done.

JanTx 06-07-2014 02:08 PM

Thought of that but it wasn't meant to be a bed quilt. Oh well! It would be great on a single bed, but not quite wide enough for double. They'll just have to fold it. And fold it. And ...,

QuiltnNan 06-07-2014 02:27 PM

nicely done

barny 06-07-2014 02:42 PM

It's beautiful and I would call it done. they will love it.

jenOSU 06-07-2014 03:43 PM

Call it done and let them figure out where it goes! LOL you did a great job on this.

QUILTNMO 06-07-2014 05:11 PM

terri bb 06-07-2014 05:19 PM

beautiful use of t shirts! this is a great quilt full of many memories!

Jeanne S 06-07-2014 05:20 PM

Leave it as is and tell them it is a "2 person" couch throw!! Nicely done!

Tweety2911 06-07-2014 05:51 PM

Beautifully done!! Call it a day...the length makes it great to tuck under the feet or pillows. It will be loved as is!!

letawellman 06-07-2014 06:27 PM

this reminds me of a monster-sized top that I finished for a customer. She had joined the t-shirts and hired me to quilt it for her. It was HUGE - barely fit on my LA machine, and when I finished it, it completely engulfed my queen-sized bed. HOWEVER - she was thrilled with it. So, I'd say back it, quilt it with a panto (it's amazing how well pantos work on t-shirt quilts) and call it done.

I have a lot of strangely long quilts because I have a lot of strangely long men. They like to be able to roll up like a burrito. I'm sure this quilt will be loved.

gibbette 06-07-2014 11:08 PM

nicely done. love the colors.

QM 06-08-2014 12:58 AM

Well done. Extra length means tucking space.

gabeway 06-08-2014 04:50 AM

Great job! Not too long!

joyful1 06-08-2014 07:09 AM

Tbh you made a great guilt!

dunster 06-08-2014 02:15 PM

I think it's very nicely done. The extra length may come in handy.

MargeD 06-09-2014 07:26 AM

Nicely done, and I agree with sweet that the extra length means you can tuck in the pillows. Sometimes quilts decide how they want to be completed - I made one family reunion quilt that was determined to be longer than I originally anticipated, but my SIL loved the extra length, so she could tuck it under the pillows.

lbc 06-09-2014 07:28 AM

You used the shirts she wanted so there should be no complaints. Great job.

feline fanatic 06-09-2014 08:26 AM

I would call it done as well. But in the future you can make a T shirt quilt using your 14 x 18 block size only change your setting to 5 across and 4 down. It will even out the size and make the quilt just a few inches longer than it is wide.

fred singer 06-09-2014 09:53 AM

terrific job

Prim Quilts 06-09-2014 10:06 AM

I am sure it will be well loved.

Making a t shirt quilt almost always ends with a surprise. You did a very nice job on this one.

wildyard 06-09-2014 10:24 AM

I think it's great and would call it done. Something to consider if you have a similar issue in the future: If I'm seeing correctly, not all the panels are that large and some have extra plain tshirt fabric to bring them to size. What I often do is make different sized rows. If some need that large a row, then I will have one row with large squares. That might be followed by a row of narrow squares where the design might only be 10 or 12". I don't feel like all the blocks have to be the same size in my quilts. If I have an extra single large block or 2, I might position them in the center of a row and use two smaller blocks on each side.

Just some things to think about if you don't want to deal with the extra length another time. I sure would leave this one as is tho, it's great and I'm sure it will be loved!

Its wonderful. I have a dear friend that is over 6 foot tall and her brother is 6'7" When making quilts for them we have to tweak the pattern all the time so they can keep their feet covered.

Best answer! And true!

madamekelly 06-09-2014 01:19 PM

I too am making an unusually long quilt, for a dear friend who stands 6'4", and her dearest wish is to have a quilt that she can tuck in, and still have it around her shoulders. Sometimes a quilt just needs to be a certain size and sometimes a 'quiltee' wants it that way. All I know is that my quilts never are exactly the size I aim for, and that is OK with me. Your quilt is gorgeous!

nwm50 06-09-2014 01:51 PM

That extra length is perfect....you know how some of us likes to cuddle and pull more up around our head?? Then the bottom would surely keep feet covered!!

Caswews 06-09-2014 03:25 PM

Very nice !! thanks for sharing ...

teacherbailey 06-09-2014 03:47 PM

I'm 6' tall and add length to almost every quilt. If mine look a little out of proportion, oh well....they are for ME! Yours looks fine and includes all of the great collection of shirts, so I say, "Leave it be, and it will be longer than usual---and that is just FINE!".

carolynjo 06-09-2014 04:29 PM

You did a great job. Let them figure out how to use it. I know they will love it.

margecam52 06-09-2014 07:16 PM

Not too long at all. I just did one that was 90 x 132"...so they could use it like a bedspread.

The extra length is for tucking in the toes. Being tall makes it nicer.

solstice3 06-09-2014 09:16 PM

Nicely done

caspharm 06-10-2014 01:59 PM

It looks great! Are they over 6' tall? :)

JanTx 06-19-2014 08:59 PM

Love the idea is changing the blocks to 5 x 4 - will definitely use that. Thanks. Yes, the boy/man it is for is 6'3".

Yardbird 06-22-2014 06:07 PM

Call it good and done. I like it. Where do you live? I'm from Texas too.

twinkie 06-23-2014 02:26 AM

I don't think it is too long. I would rather have it a few inches too long than too short.
